Chapter 10 - THE ENEMY'S CALL

The satellite phone kept ringing, cutting through the quiet cabin like an alarm bell.

Enzo didn't break eye contact with Adeline for three long seconds.

Then, with a dark scowl, he stood up, walked over to the wooden desk, and picked up the receiver.

"Speak," Enzo commanded.

"Well, well, well," a smooth, arrogant voice echoed through the speaker.

Senator Thomas Vance.

"I must admit, Enzo, I didn't expect you to survive the thermite charges at your estate. You're harder to kill than a cockroach."

Enzo’s grip on the phone tightened so hard his knuckles turned white.

"You blew up my home, Thomas," Enzo said, his voice dropping into a glacial, terrifying whisper.

"You sent mercenaries to murder an innocent woman under my roof."

"Innocent?" Senator Vance laughed softly on the other end of the line.

"My dear boy, that 'innocent woman' is carrying stolen property that belongs to the state of Illinois. And more importantly, she's carrying the evidence that could ruin us both."

"Us?" Enzo sneered.

"I have nothing to do with your embezzlement scheme, Thomas."

"Oh, but you do," Vance countered, his tone turning smug.

"Your late uncle signed every single laundering authorization using the Marchetti family holding accounts. If that file goes public, your entire syndicate goes down with me."

Enzo glanced back at Adeline, who was watching him intently from the sofa.

"The file is already out of your reach, Thomas," Enzo said smoothly.

"Is it?" Vance chuckled.

"Check your email, Enzo. Or better yet... look out the front window of your little cabin."

Enzo froze.

He dropped the phone, spun around, and sprinted to the front window, ripping back the heavy steel shutter.

Outside, cutting through the dark pine forest, three black SUVs were rolling slowly down the unpaved access road, their headlights cutting through the fog like a pack of wolves closing in on their prey.
