Chapter 5 - THE ATTACK ON THE EAST WING

The sound of shattering glass tore through the quiet night like a gunshot.

Enzo spun around, his hand instinctively sliding beneath his jacket to grip the handle of his concealed Sig Sauer pistol.

"Stay here," Enzo ordered Adeline, his voice leaving no room for argument.

He dashed out of the study toward the grand staircase, drawing his weapon as he moved.

Down in the main foyer, red emergency strobe lights began to flash overhead as the estate's automated security grid tripped.

Guards in tactical gear were shouting, rushing toward the east wing where the dining hall and library met.

Ambrose appeared from the service corridor, clutching an encrypted radio.

"Master Enzo! The south perimeter gate was breached by an unmarked van! At least six armed men are moving through the lower corridor!"

"Vance's men?" Enzo demanded, descending the stairs two at a time.

"Negative, sir," Ambrose panted.

"They're wearing black tactical gear with no insignia. Professional mercs. And they're not looking to rob the vault."

Enzo’s blood ran cold.

If they weren't after money, they were after information.

And the only new variable in this house tonight was the woman locked in his third-floor study.

"Secure the perimeter!" Enzo barked into his radio, rallying his enforcers.

"Flush them out of the east wing and take prisoners!"

Gunfire erupted—the muffled, rapid thud-thud-thud of suppressed submachine guns echoing through the vaulted stone corridors.

Upstairs on the third floor, Adeline stood frozen by the heavy oak desk.

She heard the gunfire echoing up the stairwell.

She knew exactly what those men were looking for.

The manila folder sitting on Enzo's desk.

The file containing her real name, her hospital records, and the micro-film she had smuggled out of Mercy General Hospital four years ago.

The doorknob of the study slowly turned.

Adeline's hand dipped into her apron pocket, closing around a heavy brass letter opener.

The door pushed open.

A masked man in black tactical gear stepped into the room, raising a silenced pistol directly toward her chest.
