Chapter 9 - THE SAFE HOUSE IN THE WOODS

The safe house was hidden deep within the dense pine forests forty miles north of Chicago.

It was an isolated stone cabin equipped with heavy steel shutters, backup generators, and a fully stocked trauma medical kit.

Inside, the air smelled of burning pine logs and antiseptic wipes.

Enzo gently laid Adeline down on the leather sofa by the stone fireplace, clicking on a bright overhead surgical lamp.

"Hold this," Enzo instructed, handing her the gauze pad.

"Press down firmly while I prep the suture kit."

Adeline bit her lower lip, pressing her hand against her wounded shoulder as Enzo stripped off his ruined suit jacket and rolled up his white dress shirt sleeves.

His forearms were corded with muscle and pale scars—the physical map of a life built on violence and absolute control.

"You're shaking," Enzo noted, pouring a small amount of liquid iodine into a stainless steel bowl.

"I'm not shaking from the pain," Adeline said through gritted teeth, her face pale under the harsh light.

"I'm shaking because I know Senator Vance won't stop until that file is published."

Enzo looked up from the medical tray, his gray eyes locking onto hers with a fierce, unwavering intensity.

"Senator Vance will never see that file again," Enzo said softly.

"Because by dawn, every copy of it will be sent directly to every major media outlet in the country."

Adeline blinked in surprise. "You'll help me expose him? Even though your uncle was involved?"

"My uncle is dead," Enzo stated flatly, picking up the needle holder and surgical thread.

"And anyone who uses the Marchetti name to cover up murder ceases to be family."

He leaned in close, his touch surprisingly gentle as he began cleaning the wound.

"This is going to sting," he warned.

The needle pierced her skin. Adeline gasped, her fingers instinctively grabbing the fabric of Enzo's shirt, pulling herself closer to him as the sharp pain radiated through her shoulder.

Enzo paused, his face mere inches from hers.

He could feel her breath warm against his skin, could smell the faint scent of rain and lavender clinging to her hair.

For the first time in his adult life, the ruthless mafia boss of Chicago forgot about syndicates, politics, and enemies.

He only saw the brave, broken woman who had taken a bullet meant for him.

"Why did you do it, Adeline?" he whispered, his voice losing its cold edge, replaced by a raw, genuine vulnerability.

"Why risk your life for a man you've only known for eleven days?"

Adeline looked up into his deep gray eyes, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"Because in a house full of monsters, Mr. Marchetti," she whispered back, "you were the only one who stepped forward to protect someone who couldn't fight back."

Enzo’s breath caught.

Before either of them could pull away, the secure satellite phone on the cabin's desk began to ring with a shrill, piercing shriek.
