Chapter 14 - THE RECKONING

Two weeks later, the Marchetti estate was quiet once more.
The north wing was already undergoing reconstruction, but the grand foyer and the central ballroom had been fully restored to their pristine, terrifying elegance.
Adeline Croft stood by the grand second-floor window, looking out over the manicured gardens where the morning mist was slowly lifting under the autumn sun.
She wasn't wearing a gray maid's uniform anymore.
She wore a simple, elegant ivory silk dress that complemented the quiet grace of her posture.
Footsteps sounded behind her.
Enzo Marchetti walked into the room, wearing a black three-piece suit, his gray eyes softer than she had ever seen them before.
He stopped a few feet away, his hands tucked casually into his trouser pockets.
"The federal prosecutor called an hour ago," Enzo said quietly.
"Senator Vance has been formally indicted on thirty-two counts of racketeering, embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit murder. He'll never see the outside of a federal penitentiary again."
Adeline turned around, a profound sense of peace washing over her features.
"And my father's name?"
"Cleared completely," Enzo replied, taking a step closer to her.
"The city council is erecting a memorial plaque at Mercy General Hospital honoring Arthur Croft as an honest man who stood against corruption."
Tears welled up in Adeline's eyes, but this time, they were tears of pure, unadulterated relief.
She reached out, her hand resting gently against Enzo's chest.
"I don't know how to thank you, Enzo," she whispered.
"You don't have to thank me," Enzo said, his voice dropping into that low, hypnotic register that made her breath catch.
"When you applied to work in this house eleven days ago, you were running from your past."
He reached out, his warm, strong fingers gently cupping her face, his thumb brushing away a stray tear from her cheek.
"I don't want you to run anymore, Adeline."
"What are you saying?" she asked, her heart hammering against her ribs.
Enzo reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a small black velvet box, opening it to reveal a ring of platinum set with a flawless diamond that caught the morning light.
"I'm saying," Enzo murmured, dropping gracefully to one knee on the marble floor, "that this house has plenty of rooms, and the most important one has been empty for far too long."
May you like
"Adeline Croft... will you stay here not as a maid, not as a guest, but as my wife and the queen of this house?"
