Chapter 11 - THE SIEGE OF THE CABIN

"They tracked the satellite ping," Enzo cursed under his breath, drawing his Sig Sauer and checking the magazine.
"How many?" Adeline asked, struggling to sit up despite her bleeding shoulder.
"Three vehicles. At least twelve men," Enzo replied, moving swiftly to lock the heavy steel security bolts on the cabin's front door.
"Can we hold them off?"
"We don't have to hold them off," Enzo said, his eyes scanning the cabin's tactical layout.
"There's an underground escape tunnel beneath the floorboards of the pantry. It leads out to the riverbank half a mile away."
"And you?" Adeline demanded, standing up, ignoring the pain in her shoulder.
"I'm not leaving you behind, Enzo."
"I'm not staying behind," Enzo said sharply, grabbing a Remington shotgun from the weapon rack by the door and handing it to her.
"Can you shoot?"
Adeline took the heavy shotgun, braced it against her uninjured shoulder, and pumped the slide with practiced, lethal efficiency.
"My father taught me how to hunt deer when I was ten," she said coldly.
"Let's see how Senator Vance's mercenaries compare."
A heavy thud shook the front door as the first mercenary threw his weight against the wood, followed immediately by the shattering of side-window glass.
"They're breaching!" Enzo shouted.
The cabin exploded into chaos.
The front door splintered inward under the impact of a heavy battering ram.
Three armed mercenaries poured through the threshold, weapons raised.
Enzo fired twice, dropping the lead enforcer instantly.
At the same exact moment, Adeline swung the Remington shotgun toward the window, pulling the trigger with a deafening roar that sent two more mercenaries scrambling backward through the broken glass.
"Move!" Enzo yelled, grabbing her good arm and pulling her toward the pantry.
