Chapter 9 - THE BASEMENT CONFRONTATION

The subterranean service level smelled of cordite, damp stone, and spilled oil.
Water dripped steadily from an overhead pipe, splashing rhythmically against the concrete floor.
Rafe moved through the shadows like a ghost, his suppressed pistol held close to his chest, his eyes scanning every dim corner of the corridor.
Footsteps echoed ahead of him—heavy, boot-clad steps moving toward the armory doors.
"Check that corner!" a harsh voice barked in the dark.
Two Marcone enforcers rounded the bend, their assault rifles raised, sweeping the hallway.
They never saw him coming.
Rafe fired twice—two quiet, muffled puffs of smoke from his barrel—and both men collapsed silently against the damp brick wall.
He stepped over their bodies without breaking stride, rounding the corner into the primary generator room.
Standing by the main electrical breaker box was a tall, silver-haired man in an expensive trench coat—Vincent Marcone himself.
Marcone held a heavy-duty thermal charge in his hand, wiring it directly into the estate's primary power grid.
"I have to hand it to you, Santoro," Marcone said without turning around, his voice echoing in the concrete chamber.
"You built a nice little fortress here."
Rafe stepped into the dim light of the generator room, his pistol leveled at Marcone's spine.
"Turn around, Vincent," Rafe said softly.
Marcone slowly turned.
He wasn't shaking.
He had the calm, dead-eyed expression of a man who knew he was cornered and had nothing left to lose.
"You think killing me solves this?" Marcone sneered, holding his hands up slowly.
"My captains across the state line know I'm here. If I don't check in by sunrise, they burn every restaurant, every store, every property bearing your name."
Rafe took one slow step closer.
"Let them try," Rafe replied.
"Because by sunrise, your captains will be too busy running for their lives to worry about my properties."
Marcone’s smile faltered.
"What are you talking about?"
"While you were busy trying to break into my house tonight," Rafe said, his voice as smooth and cold as river ice, "Abel Ferraro and my strike teams cleared out your primary warehouses in South Boston, seized your offshore accounts, and delivered your financial ledgers to the federal prosecutor."
Color drained entirely from Marcone’s face.
"You... you raided us?"
"You brought a knife to a slaughterhouse, Vincent," Rafe whispered.
Before Marcone could lunge for the detonator in his pocket, Rafe’s boot flashed out, kicking the device across the concrete floor.
At the same exact moment, Abel Ferraro stepped out from the shadows behind Marcone, bringing the heavy butt of a shotgun down hard across the back of the syndicate boss's shoulders.
Marcone dropped to his knees with a choked groan, hitting the concrete hard.
Abel zip-tied his wrists behind his back in three practiced seconds.
Rafe stood over him, looking down with absolute, chilling detachment.
"Pack him up," Rafe ordered Abel.
"Deliver him to the federal marshals waiting at the west gate."
"Done," Abel muttered, hauling the groaning syndicate boss up by his collar.
Rafe turned away, walking back toward the private elevator.
The battle was over.
The war was won.
May you like
And now, there was only one thing left to do.
