Chapter 6 - THE LOCKDOWN

The storm sirens atop the Blackwell-Santoro security towers began to wail at 2:15 a.m.

A low, throbbing howl that cut through the damp night air across the entire west side of the city.

Inside the main hall, crystal chandeliers flickered once before dying entirely as the emergency generators kicked in, bathing the marble floors in a cold, amber backup light.

Marin stood near the grand staircase, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

She watched as armed guards in tactical gear moved with terrifying efficiency, securing the heavy iron shutters over the bulletproof windows.

"Stay here," Rafe commanded, walking past her toward the front doors.

He was wearing a dark tactical turtleneck and a heavy shoulder holster over his chest, his black hair swept back from his severe face.

"Mr. Santoro—please," Marin gasped, stepping forward.

"Those men... they're killers. They don't care about rules. They'll burn this entire building down to get to me."

Rafe paused.

He turned around, walking back until he stood directly in front of her.

He reached out and gently cupped her face with his large hand, his thumb brushing away a stray tear from her cheek.

"Marin," he said, his voice completely steady.

"Nobody burns my house down."

"You don't know Vincent Marcone," she pleaded.

"He's an animal. He tortured my neighbor just to find out where I worked."

A faint, grim smile touched the corner of Rafe's mouth.

"Vincent Marcone," Rafe murmured, "is a man who forgot that Boston belongs to the Santoros."

He dropped his hand and turned away, striding out toward the reinforced foyer where Abel and twenty armed men were waiting behind a barricade of sandbags.

Marin watched him go, her breath caught in her throat.

She had spent six months running from shadows, hiding her face, counting pennies in her car, terrified of her own shadow.

And now, a mafia boss was waging war against an entire syndicate simply because someone had dared to raise a hand against her in his hallway.

Outside, the heavy thud of an explosion shook the ground.

A section of the outer perimeter fence had been breached.

Headlights cut through the rain as three black armored vans surged up the gravel driveway, stopping fifty yards from the grand entrance.

The side doors slid open with a metallic crash.

Dozens of masked men spilled out into the courtyard, automatic weapons raised, opening fire on the estate's automated security turrets.

Glass shattered in a shower of glittering diamonds across the stone steps.

Inside the foyer, Rafe raised his hand.

"Hold your fire," he instructed quietly.

The enforcers rushed the front doors, blowing the heavy oak hinges with a shaped explosive charge.

Smoke billowed into the grand foyer as the smoke cleared, revealing the lead enforcer—a massive brute with a jagged scar across his throat—stepping through the broken threshold.

"Santoro!" the brute roared, laughing as he raised his assault rifle.

"Hand over the girl and nobody else has to die tonight!"

Rafe stepped out from behind the marble pillar.

He didn't raise a weapon.

He simply looked at the man with an expression of profound pity.

"You're standing on my floor," Rafe said softly.

"And you're tracking mud on my marble."

Before the enforcer could pull the trigger, Rafe raised two fingers.

From the upper gallery, three synchronized sniper rifles cracked through the smoke.

The lead enforcer dropped instantly, never knowing what hit him.

May you like

And the war for Boston had officially begun.
