Chapter 13 - THE AMBUSH AT THE HARBOR

The old shipping yards at Pier 48 were abandoned, rusted, and forgotten by the city council.

At midnight, the fog rolled in thick off the harbor, swallowing the skeletal cranes and rotting wooden pilings in a blanket of grey mist.

A single black sedan sat idling near warehouse building twelve.

Inside the vehicle, Viktor Marcone gripped the steering wheel with scarred knuckles, his eyes darting frantically toward the dark entrance of the warehouse.

"Where the hell is he?" Viktor muttered, cursing under his breath.

"He should have been here twenty minutes ago."

"He's not coming, Viktor," a calm, chilling voice echoed from the backseat.

Viktor froze.

His head whipped around.

Sitting in the shadows behind the driver's seat, holding a suppressed automatic pistol with casual elegance, was Rafael Santoro.

"Santoro?!" Viktor gasped, lunging toward the glove box for his own weapon.

Before his fingers could even graze the handle, Rafe's pistol barrel pressed firmly against the back of Viktor's neck.

"Don't," Rafe whispered.

"One twitch, Viktor, and your brother will have company in the ground by morning."

Viktor slumped back against the steering wheel, sweat beading heavily on his forehead.

"How... how did you find me?"

"You're sloppy," Rafe said smoothly, stepping out of the rear door of the sedan while keeping his weapon trained squarely on Viktor's temple.

Abel Ferraro stepped out from behind a stack of rusted shipping containers, cutting off any chance of escape.

"You think because your brother got locked away that you could pick up where he left off?" Rafe asked, leaning down slightly to look through the open driver's window.

"You threatened my family," Viktor spat, his voice trembling with fury.

"You destroyed everything my family built!"

"Your family built an empire on extortion, blood, and cowardice," Rafe countered, his voice as cold as winter stone.

"And you thought you could use Marin's mother as leverage to get to me."

"She's just a waitress—"

Crack.

Rafe didn't hesitate.

He struck Viktor across the face with the heavy grip of his pistol, splitting the man's lip and sending blood spattering across the dashboard.

"Call her a waitress again," Rafe whispered, his voice dangerously low, "and I'll feed you to the harbor crabs piece by piece."

Viktor whimpered, holding his bleeding face, all the arrogance draining out of him in an instant.

"What do you want?" Viktor choked out.

"I want a message delivered to whatever corrupt judges and politicians are still taking your money," Rafe said, straightening up and gesturing to Abel.

"Tell them that Boston is closed for business."

Abel opened the car door, hauled Viktor out by his collar onto the wet concrete, and zip-tied his hands behind his back with ruthless efficiency.

Rafe stood watching the fog roll in off the dark water, his hands tucked casually into his trouser pockets.

The shadow had tried to return.

May you like

And the shadow had been instantly erased.
