Chapter 11 - THE NEW DESK

The executive office on the forty-seventh floor had never looked so alive.

The massive walnut desk, once cluttered only with cold shipping manifests and payroll columns, now held stacks of high-level financial audits, philanthropic expansion plans, and architectural blueprints for the new St. Vincent's Hospital wing.

Marin sat in the high-backed leather chair, her fingers moving smoothly across the keyboard of a sleek new terminal.

She wore a charcoal-gray tailored blazer over a silk blouse, her hair pinned back in a polished, professional knot.

The transition from scrubbing banquet floors to managing the multi-million-dollar accounts of the Santoro empire had been swift, executed with the terrifying, absolute efficiency that only Rafael Santoro could command.

A soft knock rattled the heavy oak door.

"Come in," Marin called out, not looking up from her screen.

Abel Ferraro entered, holding a thick leather folder in his hand. His usual stern scowl was replaced by a look of profound, respectful distance.

"Morning, Miss Hollis," Abel said, placing the folder neatly on the corner of her desk.

"Morning, Abel. What's this?"

"Background clearances for the new security detail," Abel replied.

"Boss wants your sign-off before we finalize contracts with the federal marshals."

Marin paused, raising an eyebrow as she looked up at the head of security.

"My sign-off? Since when does security run through the financial office?"

"Since the boss decided you have a better eye for liabilities than the entire intelligence division combined," Abel said dryly, a faint trace of a smile touching his lips.

"Besides, after what happened with Marcone, Blackwell and Santoro assets operate under zero tolerance."

Marin opened the first folder, scanning the clean military records and vetting notes with a sharp, critical eye.

"They look solid," she noted, signing her initials with a gold fountain pen Rafe had gifted her.

"Approved."

Abel scooped up the folder with a nod.

"Thanks. Oh, and Rafe wants to see you in his private office across the hall. Working lunch."

"Did he mention what it's about?"

"Never does," Abel muttered, turning toward the door.

"Just be ready."

Marin watched him leave, a small, genuine smile playing on her lips.

Life over the past two months had transformed into something she never could have imagined in her wildest dreams.

The whispers among the estate staff had changed from fearful gossip to deep, unwavering respect.

Nobody crossed the former waitress who had brought down an interstate syndicate and earned the personal protection of Rafael Santoro.

At precisely twelve o'clock, Marin stood up, smoothed down her blazer, and walked across the private corridor toward Rafe's master office.

The double mahogany doors were open.

Rafe was standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows, reviewing a set of municipal development proposals spread across a marble table.

He looked up as she entered.

His dark eyes swept over her with an intensity that made her pulse quicken instantly.

"You look professional, Marin," he said, walking over.

"Thank you," she replied, keeping her voice steady, though her heart was hammering against her ribs.

"Abel said you wanted to see me."

"I do."

Rafe gestured to the marble table.

"Come here and look at this."

Marin stepped closer, resting her hand on the edge of the table.

The blueprints detailed a massive, state-of-the-art medical facility.

"St. Vincent's Hospital expansion," Rafe explained, tracing a finger along the architectural lines.

"Specifically, the new long-term care and oncology wing."

Marin’s breath caught in her throat.

"Is this...?"

"It's fully funded by the Santoro Foundation," Rafe said quietly.

"Your mother's floor will be the first completed next month."

Marin looked up at him, her eyes shining with unshed tears.

"Rafe... you didn't have to build an entire hospital wing."

"I didn't have to," he agreed, his gaze locking onto hers with unyielding warmth.

"I wanted to."

The space between them suddenly felt very small.

The air grew warm, charged with an unspoken tension that had been building silently for weeks.

Rafe took half a step closer.

"There is something else," he murmured, his voice dropping into that low, hypnotic register.

"What?" she whispered.

"My father left me an empire built on fear," Rafe said softly, his hand reaching out to gently trace the line of her jaw.

"But with you beside me, Marin... for the first time in my life, I want to build a legacy."

Marin leaned into his touch, her eyes closing for a fraction of a second as his thumb brushed her cheek.

"You already have," she whispered.

May you like

And as Rafe leaned down and pressed his lips softly against hers, Marin knew that the nightmares of her past were truly dead and buried, and her real life had finally begun.
