Chapter 8 - THE FOURTH-FLOOR PANIC SUITE

The fourth-floor panic suite was a fortress disguised as a luxury study.
Walls lined with rare leather-bound books hid four inches of reinforced tungsten alloy.
The windows were bulletproof obsidian glass that looked out over the stormy river below.
Rafe pushed the heavy oak door open, pulled Marin inside, and punched a six-digit code into the digital keypad beside the frame.
A heavy steel bulkhead slid smoothly out of the wall, sealing the room off with a definitive, airtight clack.
"Is everyone else safe?" Marin asked, breathing heavily as she sank onto the edge of a velvet sofa.
"The staff are in the subterranean shelter," Rafe replied, walking over to a mahogany liquor cabinet.
He poured two fingers of amber bourbon into a heavy crystal glass, but didn't drink it.
Instead, he brought it over and set it on the small table in front of her.
"Drink this. It will stop your hands from shaking."
Marin looked at the glass, then up at Rafe.
"You're not drinking?"
"I don't need it," he said simply, pulling a small silver laptop from the desk and flipping it open.
"How bad is it?" she asked softly.
"Marcone is desperate," Rafe said, his fingers flying across the keyboard, pulling up thermal feeds from the security cameras around the estate.
"When I seized his shipping lanes last month, he lost millions. Coming after you tonight was his last-ditch effort to create leverage."
"Because of my father's debt?"
"Your father's debt was wiped out the moment he died," Rafe stated flatly, his eyes never leaving the screen.
"The Marcone family uses fictional debts to extort families across the state line. It's a racket. And tonight, it ends permanently."
Marin watched the flickering light of the monitor dance across the sharp angles of his face.
"You're risking everything for me," she whispered.
"You're a waitress who got slapped in my hallway by a woman I should have dismissed months ago," Rafe corrected, looking up from the screen to meet her eyes.
"This isn't about charity, Marin. This is about principle."
"What principle?"
"In my house," Rafe said, his voice dropping into that low, hypnotic register, "nobody touches what belongs to me."
The words hung in the air between them, heavy and undeniable.
Marin felt a sudden warmth rush through her chest, pushing away the lingering chill of fear.
Before she could answer, a loud explosion echoed from somewhere deep within the mansion.
The floor shuddered beneath their feet.
On the laptop screen, one of the basement corridor cameras flickered, hissed with static, and went completely black.
Rafe closed the laptop with a single, sharp snap.
He reached into his shoulder holster, pulled out a spare magazine, and slapped it into his pistol with a crisp metallic click.
"They found the service shaft," Rafe said calmly.
"Stay here. Do not open this door for anyone except me or Abel."
"Rafe—wait!" she gasped, standing up.
He paused at the heavy steel bulkhead, looking back over his shoulder one last time.
"I told you before, Marin," he murmured, a dangerous, dark smile touching his lips.
"I don't lose."
May you like
The steel door slid shut behind him, leaving her alone in the quiet, fortified room as the war raged on outside.
