Chapter 6 - Behind Locked Doors: The Fake Touch That Felt Too Real

The media hailed the gala as the romantic triumph of the decade. Headlines across the country read: Billionaire Sebastian Blackwood Reclaims Lost Love - The Heroic Debt Behind the Diamond Ring.

Back at Blackwood Manor, the dynamic had shifted completely. Arthur and Victoria were effectively barred from entering the executive floor of Blackwood Global, and the estate staff treated me with profound reverence.

Yet, behind the closed double doors of our private master suite, the emotional tension between Sebastian and me was reaching a boiling point.

It was two o'clock in the morning. A violent thunderstorm was raging outside, rattling the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the ocean. Unable to sleep, I wrapped myself in a silk robe and walked into the grand private library that sat between our bedroom suites.

The room was illuminated only by the dying embers of the hearth and a single brass reading lamp. Sitting at the massive mahogany desk, surrounded by architectural schematics and shipping manifests, was Sebastian. His dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms, dark strands of hair falling over his forehead as he rubbed his tired eyes.

"You should be resting," I said softly, stepping into the warm glow of the fire.

Sebastian looked up, startled, before his expression softened into that rare, gentle look he reserved only for me. "I could say the same to you."

"The storm woke me," I replied, walking over to the bookshelves lined with rare first-edition volumes on Renaissance art. "I used to sit with Diego during storms like this. He was always afraid the thunder would shake the roof off our apartment."

"He called me this afternoon," Sebastian said, a faint smile playing on his lips. "He told me he wants to be a maritime architect when he grows up. He asked if I could teach him how to build cargo ships."

I stopped, looking at Sebastian with a mixture of awe and tenderness. "You spent an hour on the phone with a seven-year-old discussing ship engines?"

"He's a bright kid," Sebastian replied, closing his ledger. "And he loves his sister more than anything in this world."

I walked over to the desk, leaning against the edge. "Why did you say those things at the gala, Sebastian? About me being your heart... about loving me?"

Sebastian went completely still. The silence stretched between us, heavy with unspoken truths, punctuated only by the crackle of the fireplace and the distant roar of thunder.

He rose slowly from his leather chair, stepping around the desk until he was standing inches from me. The warmth radiating from his body was intoxicating.

"I said what needed to be said to silence them," he murmured, his deep voice dropping to a husky whisper. "And... I said what I realized was true."

My breath caught in my throat. "Sebastian..."

"I thought I brought you here out of duty," he continued, taking a step closer, his slate-gray eyes burning with raw, unfiltered vulnerability. "I thought I was merely repaying a debt to David Santos. But every day I watch your strength, your grace, the way you protect your brother, the way you look at the world with kindness despite everything you’ve suffered... you’ve dismantled every defense I spent eight years building, Maria."

He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently cupping the side of my face. His touch sent a shiver of pure electricity cascading down my spine.

"This was supposed to be a contract," I whispered, my voice trembling as I looked into his eyes. "Six months."

"Then tear up the contract," Sebastian whispered, his thumb lightly tracing the contour of my lower lip. "Stay because you want to. Stay because you feel what I feel."

He leaned in slowly, giving me every opportunity to step back. But I didn't move. I closed my eyes and leaned into his touch.

When his lips met mine, the entire world melted away.

The kiss began with a gentle, aching reverence, but quickly deepened into a fierce, passionate hunger that had been building between us since the night of the auction. His arms wrapped around my waist, lifting me effortlessly against him, while my fingers tangled in his thick, dark hair. Every pretense, every lie, every boundary of the fake engagement shattered into dust.

When he finally pulled back, breathing heavily, his forehead rested against mine, his gray eyes shining with fierce emotion.

"You are not a transaction, Maria," he swore softly against my lips. "You are my future."
