Chapter 13 - The Reckoning: Fire, Confession, and the Fall of an Empire

The mercenaries bound my wrists with heavy zip-ties to the steel structural pillar of the gallery basement, right beside Patricia. They dumped three barrels of industrial solvent across the wooden floorboards, splashing the walls and stairs with flammable liquid.
"Maria... I'm so sorry," Patricia sobbed through her bruised lips as the men retreated up the stairs. "They forced me to call you... they threatened my family..."
"It’s okay, Patricia," I whispered, struggling furiously against the plastic restraints, my wrists bleeding against the sharp edges. "Hold on!"
Above us, the heavy iron door slammed and locked. A red digital timer on the wall began counting down: 04:59... 04:58...
Suddenly, the night shattered.
A deafening roar of helicopter blades echoed directly above the gallery roof. The sound of high-caliber gunfire erupted from the alleyways, followed by the shattering of skylights.
CRASH!
Tactical flashbangs detonated on the upper floor with blinding light and concussive thunder. Screams of terror from Arthur’s mercenaries echoed through the air ducts, followed by the rapid double-tap of silenced weapons.
"Arthur!" a voice roared from above—a voice that shook the very foundations of the building.
Sebastian.
A series of gunshots echoed near the staircase. A body tumbled down the concrete steps—one of Arthur’s armed guards, completely neutralized.
Then, the basement door was kicked off its hinges with explosive force.
Sebastian charged into the basement, a tactical weapon in hand, his suit torn, blood smudged across his cheek, looking like an angel of death.
"Maria!"
"Sebastian! The timer!" I screamed, pointing to the wall where the counter flashed: 01:12... 01:11...
Sebastian didn't hesitate for a microsecond. He dropped his weapon, drew a serrated combat knife from his tactical vest, and rushed to my side. With two swift, powerful strokes, he slashed through the heavy zip-ties binding my wrists, then immediately severed Patricia’s restraints.
"Get her up the emergency fire stairs! Now!" Sebastian roared to Marcus, who had breached through the rear loading dock.
Marcus grabbed Patricia, hauling her toward the exit.
Sebastian turned to me, wrapping his powerful arms around me, pulling me up into his chest. "I’m sorry, Maria! The documents Victoria gave you were forged! I never knew about Diego's debt! I swear to you—"
"I know!" I cried, wrapping my arms around his neck, burying my face in his shoulder. "I know! I'm sorry I ever doubted you!"
BEEP... BEEP... BEEP... 00:05... 00:04...
"Hold onto me!" Sebastian roared.
He tackled me to the ground, shielding my entire body with his own broad frame just as the incendiary charges detonated.
BOOM!
A wall of roaring orange fire erupted across the basement. The heat was searing, the shockwave shattering every glass case in the room. Metal debris and flaming timber rained down, slamming hard against Sebastian’s back as he groaned in agony, refusing to let even a spark touch my skin.
The sprinkler systems finally kicked in, blasting high-pressure water through the smoke.
Through the haze of smoke and falling water, a figure emerged from the flames near the back exit—Arthur Blackwood, coughing blood, his clothes singed, raising his pistol with trembling hands, aiming straight at my head.
"If I burn... you burn with me!" Arthur shrieked.
Before Arthur could pull the trigger, Sebastian rolled, drew his sidearm from his hip holster, and fired three precise shots.
The bullets struck Arthur’s shoulder and chest. The gun flew from Arthur’s hand, and the old tyrant collapsed backward onto the wet concrete, screaming in agony as federal tactical agents swarmed the room, pinning him to the floor and snapping steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
"Arthur Blackwood, you are under arrest for corporate espionage, arson, and three counts of first-degree murder," the lead FBI agent barked into the smoke.

Sebastian didn't look at his fallen uncle. He collapsed onto his knees beside me, his hands trembling as he pulled me into his arms, burying his face in my wet hair, weeping with overwhelming relief.
"You're safe," he choked out, his voice breaking. "You're safe, my love. It's over. It's finally over."
