Chapter 14 - Healing Wounds and Unmasked Hearts

Forty-eight hours later, the storm had passed, leaving behind a crisp, radiant autumn morning.
The federal indictments against Arthur Blackwood and his conspirators made international headlines. The stolen millions were recovered, the corporate fraud was fully dismantled, and Sebastian was officially ratified by the global board of directors as the sole, unchallengeable Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Blackwood Enterprises.
Victoria Vance was stripped of her social standing and charged with criminal complicity, fleeing the country in disgrace.
At St. Jude Memorial Hospital’s private rooftop garden, little Diego sat on a wooden bench, eating chocolate ice cream while drawing a massive cargo ship in his sketchbook.
"Look, Sebastian!" Diego cheered, holding up the drawing with a beaming smile. "I added three helicopter pads and a swimming pool for Maria!"
Sebastian—wearing a simple cashmere sweater, his back bandaged beneath his shirt from the fire—laughed warmly, sitting beside my brother and ruffling his hair. "That’s the finest engineering design I’ve ever seen, buddy. We’ll build it next year."
I stood a few feet away, holding two cups of hot cider, watching the two most important men in my life. My heart was so full of love and gratitude that tears pricked the corners of my eyes.
Sebastian noticed me, stood up, and walked over, taking the cider from my hand and setting it on a nearby table.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out the velvet box.
He didn't open it like a billionaire presenting a transaction. Instead, he took both of my hands in his, looking down into my eyes with a depth of emotion that took my breath away.
"There are no cameras here, Maria," Sebastian said softly, his voice thick with authentic, vulnerable devotion. "There is no board of directors to convince. There is no six-month contract, no family trust deadline, and no debt to repay."
He dropped down onto one knee on the garden stones.
He opened the box, revealing the five-carat heirloom diamond.
"I fell in love with you the moment I saw you walk onto that auction stage—not because of your father's memory, but because of the fierce, unyielding fire in your soul. You saved me from the darkness I lived in for eight years. You gave me a home. You gave me a family."
Sebastian looked up at me, his slate-gray eyes shining with unshed tears.
"Maria Santos, will you do me the absolute honor of becoming my real wife? Forever?"
Diego jumped up from the bench, jumping up and down. "Say yes, Maria! Say yes!"
A breathless sob of pure happiness broke from my lips. I dropped to my knees in front of Sebastian, throwing my arms around his neck, showering his face with kisses.

"Yes!" I cried, laughing through my tears. "Yes, Sebastian! A thousand times yes!"
Sebastian slipped the ring onto my finger, pulling me into a deep, passionate kiss as Diego cheered and clapped behind us under the warm morning sun.
