Chapter 5 - The Gala of Knives and An Unexpected Betrayal

Two weeks passed in a whirlwind of social preparations, media leaks, and high-society etiquette training. Diego was transferred to a luxurious pediatric recovery center in upstate New York, guarded around the clock by Sebastian’s elite private security team. Every day, I spoke with him via video call, watching the healthy color return to his face and hearing his laughter ring through the speakers.

Meanwhile, at Blackwood Manor, the battle lines were drawn.

Tonight was the Blackwood Maritime Annual Winter Gala—the most prestigious corporate event of the season, held in the grand ballroom of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Over five hundred CEOs, political figures, and international journalists would be in attendance. It was to be our official public debut as an engaged couple.

Inside the dressing suite, Patricia Monroe—whom Sebastian had hired as my personal styling director and social coordinator—fastened the back of my gown.

"Maria, you look like royalty," Patricia gasped, stepping back to admire her work.

The gown was a masterpiece of midnight-blue velvet that hugged my curves before cascading into a dramatic, sweeping train. My hair was styled in an elegant, modern updo, secured by diamond-encrusted pins, and around my neck rested a priceless sapphire pendant from the Blackwood vault.

When I stepped into the foyer where Sebastian waited, he turned. The breath caught visibly in his throat. He wore a tailored midnight-blue tuxedo that perfectly matched my gown. For a long, silent moment, his gray eyes roamed over me with an intensity that made my pulse race wildly.

"Exquisite," he murmured, offering his arm. "Are you ready to face the wolves?"

"With you? Always," I replied, surprised by the absolute conviction in my own voice.

The Metropolitan Museum ballroom was a sea of flashing cameras, champagne flutes, and soaring classical orchestra music. The moment Sebastian and I walked down the grand marble entrance, the media frenzy erupted.

"Mr. Blackwood! Over here!"

"Is it true? Are the wedding rumors confirmed?"

"Who is the mystery woman, Sebastian?"

Sebastian kept a possessive arm wrapped firmly around my waist, guiding me smoothly past the paparazzi with the calm elegance of an emperor. Whenever a camera flashed, he leaned down slightly, whispering something in my ear to make me smile, playing the role of the devoted lover with breathtaking authenticity.

However, the peace didn't last.

As Sebastian was pulled away to the VIP mezzanine for a mandatory five-minute briefing with the maritime trade commissioners, I stood near the marble fountain, sipping sparkling water.

"Enjoying the masquerade, Miss Santos?"

I turned to find Victoria Vance standing behind me, accompanied by Arthur Blackwood and three prominent high-society columnists. Victoria held a glass of champagne, her face twisted in a venomous, triumphant sneer.

"Victoria," I said calmly. "It’s a lovely evening."

"Save your breath, you cheap little fraud," Victoria spat, loud enough to draw the attention of nearby guests and reporters. "Did you really think you could fool Manhattan high society? Did you think we wouldn't dig into where Sebastian found you?"

Arthur stepped forward, raising his voice so the entire circle of aristocrats fell silent. "Ladies and gentlemen, members of the press! Before my nephew makes a mockery of Blackwood Enterprises, you deserve to know the truth about his 'fiancée.' This woman is not an art curator from old money. She is an escort purchased two weeks ago at the Elysium Charity Auction for five hundred thousand dollars!"

Gasps rippled through the crowd. Whispers broke out instantly, smartphones and cameras pointing directly at my face.

"She sold herself for cash," Victoria sneered, stepping closer. "She is a gold-digging opportunist who traded her dignity for a billionaire's checkbook!"

The shame burned hot in my chest, threatening to choke me. But before I could speak, a voice rang out across the ballroom with the force of a sonic boom.

"That is enough."

The crowd parted like the Red Sea.

Sebastian Blackwood strode into the circle, his eyes blazing with a terrifying, incandescent fury. He moved with such lethal purpose that Arthur and Victoria instinctively recoiled.

Sebastian didn't look at the crowd. He walked straight to me, took my trembling hand in his, and brought it to his lips, kissing the diamond ring before turning to face the reporters and the sneering socialites.

"My uncle is half right," Sebastian declared into the absolute silence of the room, his voice amplified by the acoustic arches of the grand hall. "I did attend the Elysium Gala. And I did bid five hundred thousand dollars."

The whispers surged, but Sebastian raised a single hand, silencing the entire room instantly.

"What my uncle failed to mention," Sebastian continued, his voice ringing with pure, unyielding authority, "is that eight years ago, when I was an orphaned, destitute runaway trapped in a burning building, Maria Santos’s father gave his life to drag me from the flames. The Santos family represents the pinnacle of honor, selflessness, and courage—virtues that people like Arthur Blackwood and Victoria Vance could never comprehend."

He turned to the reporters, his gray eyes flashing like steel.

"I did not buy a companion. I spent eight years searching for the family of the man who saved my life. And the moment I found Maria, I realized that she is the only woman worthy of standing beside me, the only woman I will ever love, and the future mother of my children."

He turned back to me, his gaze softening into pure, unadulterated devotion.

"Maria Santos is my equal. She is my heart. And anyone who disrespects her disrespects me."

Sebastian turned his icy glare back onto Arthur and Victoria. "Security. Escort Arthur and Victoria Vance off the premises. Their corporate credentials are permanently revoked."

As the security guards physically escorted the sputtering, humiliated Arthur and Victoria out of the gala under the blinding flashes of a hundred cameras, the ballroom erupted into thunderous, standing applause.

Sebastian looked down at me, his hand tightening around mine. "Are you alright?" he whispered.

I looked up at him, my heart pounding with an emotion so powerful it terrified me. "I am now," I whispered.
