Chapter 9 - Caught in the Crossfire: Ambush on the Brooklyn Bridge and the Bullet Taken for Love

Three weeks of blissful peace followed. Antonio began implementing radical changes within his organization, delegating underworld enforcement to trusted allies while accelerating his transition into legitimate real estate, green energy ports, and international shipping. Maria’s health continued to improve, and for the first time, laughter echoed through the halls of the Russo estate.
But Salvatore Moretti was a cornered animal, and cornered animals are at their most lethal.
On a crisp October evening, Antonio and I were returning from Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, where Antonio had just finalized a multi-million-dollar endowment in my name to establish a free pediatric clinic. The mood in the armored Maybach was joyful.
“You’re going to run the clinic once you finish your degree, Sophie,” Antonio said, his fingers intertwined with mine on the leather seat. “A real clinic. Legitimate, clean, and dedicated to saving lives.”
“I can’t believe it’s real,” I beamed, resting my head on his shoulder.
As our two-car convoy reached the crest of the Brooklyn Bridge, the traffic suddenly ground to an unnatural halt.
Before Luca could react, a heavy commercial dump truck veered sharply from the opposing lane, smashing violently into our lead security vehicle, flipping it onto its roof in a shower of sparks and metal.
“Ambush!” Luca screamed, drawing his sidearm. “Don Antonio, stay down!”
Three black vans skidded to a halt around us, and a dozen masked men armed with automatic rifles poured out, unleashing a deafening hail of armor-piercing bullets against the Maybach’s reinforced glass.
The heavy bulletproof glass began to spiderweb under the relentless barrage.
“Hold on!” Luca roared, slamming the vehicle into reverse to ram through the blockade behind us. But a second truck slammed into our rear bumper, pinning us in place.
“Sophie, get on the floor! Cover your head!” Antonio commanded, his voice switching instantly to cold, tactical precision. He pulled two concealed Glock pistols from under the seat, kicking his door open with brute force using the heavy armored door as a mobile shield.
Antonio fired with terrifying accuracy, dropping two gunmen within seconds. But more shooters were flanking us from the pedestrian walkway above.
Luca kicked his door open, returning fire, but a burst of automatic fire caught him in the shoulder, sending him crashing onto the asphalt with a groan of agony.
“Luca!” I screamed.
Seeing Luca bleeding out on the bridge, my medical instincts took over. Ignoring the deafening roar of gunfire and shattering glass, I lunged forward through the open door to pull Luca back into the cover of the vehicle.
“Sophie! No! Get back!” Antonio roared in sheer terror.
I grabbed Luca’s tactical vest with both hands, using all my strength to drag the two-hundred-pound bodyguard behind the heavy door. As I pulled him inside, a masked sniper on the bridge suspension cables adjusted his aim directly at my exposed back.
Antonio saw the red laser dot appear between my shoulder blades.
Without a second of hesitation, Antonio threw his entire body across mine.
CRACK!
A high-caliber sniper round tore through the air.
A sickening thud echoed above me. Antonio gasped, his heavy body collapsing over mine, pinning me against the blood-stained carpet of the car.

“Antonio!” I shrieked, feeling hot, sticky crimson instantly soaking through his dress shirt and over my hands.
The bullet had struck him high in the right chest, just inches below the clavicle.
