Chapter 11 - The Betrayal from Within: A Trusted Lieutenant’s Deception Exposed

While Antonio was recovering over the next five days, a dark question haunted the estate: How had Moretti’s assassins known our exact route and timetable across the Brooklyn Bridge? The hospital meeting had been arranged in absolute secrecy.
There was a traitor at the highest level of the Russo syndicate.
Luca, his shoulder bandaged and arm in a sling, brought the encrypted security logs to Antonio’s bedside. Antonio was propped up against his pillows, his color returning, his mind as razor-sharp as ever.
“Someone disabled the secondary GPS tracking on the lead vehicle ten minutes before we departed,” Luca reported grimly. “Only three capos had access to those security bypass codes.”
“Bring them to the wine cellar,” Antonio ordered coldly. “One by one.”
The three men were questioned in the private basement cellar. Two of them passed the interrogation without a flicker of deceit. But the third—Dominic, a senior capo who had served Antonio’s father for twenty years—showed subtle signs of extreme agitation.
I stood near the door with Luca, monitoring the proceedings. As Dominic spoke, claiming he had been at the docks all afternoon, I noticed a tiny, unmistakable white stain on the cuff of his dark suit trousers.
“Wait,” I interrupted quietly, stepping forward.
Dominic glared at me. “Don Antonio, with all due respect, I will not be questioned by your pet nurse—”
“Shut your mouth,” Antonio growled from his chair, the threat in his voice making the capo freeze. “Speak, Sophie.”
“That white powder on your cuffs and shoes,” I said, pointing downward. “It’s industrial lime powder. The only place in the five boroughs currently using that specific grade of lime is Moretti’s concrete processing plant in Gowanus. You didn't come from our docks, Dominic. You came directly from Salvatore Moretti’s headquarters.”
Dominic’s face drained of all color. He instinctively reached for his ankle holster.
CLACK.
Luca racked the slide of his pistol, pressing the cold steel barrel directly against the back of Dominic’s skull before the traitor could draw.
Dominic fell to his knees, trembling. “Antonio... please! Moretti took my daughter! He said he’d kill her if I didn't give him your route! I had no choice!”
Antonio leaned forward, his eyes devoid of mercy. “You always had a choice, Dominic. You could have come to me. I would have moved heaven and earth to save your daughter. Instead, you sold out my woman and my family.”
Antonio looked at Luca. “Find his daughter and bring her to safety immediately. As for Dominic... strip him of his rank, his assets, and exile him from this country forever. If he ever steps foot in North America again, bury him.”

Dominic was dragged out weeping in gratitude for his life.
Antonio looked at me, a proud smile warming his features. “My beautiful, brilliant nurse. You solve crimes better than my best detectives.”
