Chapter 6 - The Don’s Wrath and a Vow of Absolute Protection Made in the Dark

Elena was caught attempting to scale the eastern perimeter wall. Under interrogation in the underground holding cells, she broke within ten minutes, confessing that Salvatore Moretti had paid her five hundred thousand dollars and threatened her family to poison Maria’s evening tea.
What followed over the next forty-eight hours was a ruthless, surgical retaliation that shook the Brooklyn underworld to its foundation. Antonio unleashed the full might of the Russo syndicate. Three of Moretti’s primary shipping docks in Red Hook burned to the waterline, two illicit warehouses were seized, and Moretti’s chief lieutenant was found tied to a lamppost outside the precinct with evidence of federal racketeering taped to his chest.
Antonio did not sleep for two straight days.
On the third night, after Maria had finally stabilized and fallen into a restful, medically assisted sleep, I was sitting alone in my bedroom, staring out the reinforced window at the moonlit waters of the harbor. The adrenaline had faded, leaving me hollow, exhausted, and acutely aware of the mortal danger I had bound myself to.
A soft knock sounded at my door.
Before I could answer, the door opened, and Antonio stepped into the room.
He had showered and changed into a clean black shirt, but the dark circles beneath his eyes spoke of bone-deep exhaustion. He held a velvet jewel box in his hand.
“You should be resting,” I said softly, rising from the window seat.
Antonio didn't reply immediately. He walked across the room, stopping directly in front of me. The imposing aura of the ruthless Don seemed stripped away, leaving only an intensely protective man.
“The threat inside this house has been eliminated,” Antonio said quietly. “Elena gave up her handlers. Moretti’s network is crippled. But you... you were put in the line of fire because of me.”
“I did my job, Antonio,” I replied. “I protected your mother.”
“You did far more than your job, Sophie,” Antonio said, his voice dropping to a gravelly, intense register. “You stood between death and the only person I love. In doing so, you made yourself a target for every enemy I have in this city.”
He opened the velvet box. Inside rested an exquisite pendant—a flawless, teardrop-shaped blue diamond suspended on a platinum chain, encircled by microscopic diamonds.
“This belonged to my grandmother,” Antonio said, taking the necklace out. “It is the Russo crest jewel. In our world, wearing this signifies one thing: whoever touches the woman wearing this diamond declares war on the entire Russo family.”
“Antonio, I can't accept this—”
“Turn around,” he commanded gently.
His voice left no room for argument. Trembling slightly, I turned my back to him and lifted my hair.
Antonio stepped close, his warm chest brushing against my back. His fingers grazed the bare skin of my neck as he fastened the platinum clasp, sending an electric shock through every nerve in my body. His hands lingered on my shoulders, his thumbs gently brushing against my collarbones.
I turned back to face him, the diamond resting coolly against my chest.
Antonio looked down at me, his eyes dark with an intensity that made my knees weak. He raised his hand, his knuckles softly tracing the line of my jaw, then curling behind my neck to pull me closer.
“From this moment on, Sophie,” Antonio whispered, his lips brushing against my forehead, then trailing down to my cheek, “your life is bound to mine. I swear on my mother’s soul and the blood of my ancestors: no one will ever harm you while I draw breath. I will burn this city to ash before I let them touch a single hair on your head.”

I looked up into his fierce, beautiful face, my heart hammering against my ribs. “Antonio...”
He didn't let me finish. His mouth came down on mine in a fierce, possessive, and breathless kiss that shattered whatever doubt remained between us.
