Chapter 10 - Healing the Beast: The Vulnerable Confession When the Lights Went Down

Sirens wailed in the distance as NYPD tactical units and backup Russo security convoys swarmed the Brooklyn Bridge, forcing the remaining Moretti assassins to flee or surrender.

“Hospital! Get him to the hospital!” I screamed hysterically as backup operatives pulled Antonio from the wreckage.

“No... hospital,” Antonio wheezed, blood foaming at the corner of his lips. “Moretti... has people in the city wards. Estate... private trauma bay...”

Within fifteen frantic minutes, Antonio was rushed into the state-of-the-art emergency surgical suite located in the subterranean level of the Russo estate. The family’s on-call trauma surgeon, Dr. Rossi, was already scrubbing in.

“His right lung is collapsing from a tension pneumothorax!” I shouted, stripping off my bloody jacket and scrubbing my hands with iodine. “We need a chest tube immediately and four units of O-negative blood!”

Dr. Rossi looked at me, astonished by my clinical command. “Are you ready to assist, nurse?”

“I’m doing it,” I said with steely determination. “Hand me the scalpel.”

For three agonizing hours, Dr. Rossi and I fought for Antonio’s life. With steady hands fueled by pure, unyielding love, I inserted the chest tube to re-inflate his lung, clamped the severed arterial branch, and helped extract the shattered bullet fragments from his chest cavity.

When the final suture was tied and his vitals stabilized onto the monitor with a strong, steady rhythm, I collapsed onto the stool beside his hospital bed, trembling uncontrollably and weeping into my hands.

Maria entered the room in her wheelchair, her eyes red from crying. She placed her gentle hand over my head.

“You saved him twice, Sophie,” Maria whispered softly. “First his soul, and now his life.”

By two o’clock the following morning, the medical staff had stepped out, leaving me alone at Antonio’s bedside. I held his large, calloused hand between mine, watching the steady rise and fall of his chest.

His eyelids fluttered, and he let out a low, raspy groan.

“Sophie...” he whispered weakly.

“I’m here. I’m right here, Antonio,” I choked out, leaning over him and kissing his pale cheek. “Don't move. You have a chest tube and seven stitches in your lung.”

Antonio turned his head slightly, his dark eyes focusing on my tear-stained face. He tried to lift his hand to touch my cheek, his fingers weak.

“You’re safe,” he murmured, a faint, relieved smile touching his lips. “The bullet... didn't touch you.”

“You idiot!” I sobbed, half-laughing and half-crying. “You took a sniper bullet for me! You could have died!”

“I would take a thousand bullets before I let this world take you from me,” Antonio whispered, his voice gaining strength from pure emotion. “When I saw that laser on you, Sophie... I knew that without you, my life is nothing. No empire, no money, no power matters if you aren't by my side.”

He pulled my hand to his lips, kissing my knuckles with tender reverence.

“I love you, Sophie Miller,” the Don of Brooklyn confessed in the quiet dark. “I have loved you since the night you stood up to me in that diner.”

“I love you too, Antonio,” I replied, resting my forehead against his. “Now shut up and rest, because you have a war to end.”
