Chapter 14 - The Ultimatum and the Ring: Choosing Love Over a Life of Shadows

The arrest of Salvatore Moretti and the complete dismantling of his syndicate brought an unprecedented era of peace to the city. With Moretti behind bars for life, Antonio fulfilled the vow he had made to his mother and to me.
Over the next six months, Antonio executed a historic and irreversible restructuring of the Russo empire. He dismantled all illegal rackets, turned state’s evidence on corrupt politicians who had preyed on local businesses, and transitioned his entire conglomerate into legitimate enterprise—real estate, green harbor logistics, international import, and charitable foundations.
The underworld Don was dead. In his place stood a legitimate titan of industry, respected by the city and feared only by those who preyed on the weak.
I officially graduated from Columbia University’s nursing program at the top of my class, receiving my Bachelor of Science in Nursing with honors. On the day of my graduation, Maria sat in the front row in an elegant lavender dress, weeping with pride, while Antonio stood beside her, beaming with an intensity that outshone the sun.
That evening, Antonio took me to the rooftop terrace of the newly constructed Maria & Sophie Children’s Medical Center overlooking the illuminated skyline of Brooklyn and the harbor.
The cool autumn breeze rustled through my hair. Below us, the city lights sparkled like a sea of stars.
“We did it, Sophie,” Antonio said, wrapping his arms around my waist from behind and resting his chin on my shoulder. “The clinic opens on Monday. Five hundred children from low-income families will receive free medical care this month alone.”
“You did this, Antonio,” I turned in his arms, smiling up at him. “You gave this city hope.”
“No,” Antonio replied, looking into my eyes with a depth of love that made my breath hitch. “You saved my mother’s life. You saved my life. And most importantly, you saved my soul from the dark.”
He stepped back and reached into his coat pocket.
Slowly, gracefully, the most powerful man in Brooklyn sank to one knee on the rooftop terrace.
He opened a black velvet box, revealing a breathtaking, five-carat emerald-cut diamond ring set in platinum, surrounded by two smaller sapphires representing Maria and his late brother Marco.
“Sophie Miller,” Antonio said, his deep baritone trembling with raw, unfiltered emotion. “You walked into my life when I was surrounded by blood and shadows, and you showed me what it means to truly live. You are my strength, my conscience, and my heart. Will you do me the greatest honor of my life... and become my wife?”
Tears of pure, overwhelming joy streamed down my cheeks.

“Yes!” I cried out, throwing my arms around his neck as he rose to his feet. “Yes, Antonio! A thousand times, yes!”
He slid the ring onto my finger, lifted me off the ground, and spun me around under the starlit sky, capturing my lips in a kiss that sealed our promise for all eternity.
