Chapter 8 - The Engagement Party Massacre: Playing the Devoted Bride Before the Storm

The Grand Ballroom of the Bel-Air Country Club was drenched in white roses, crystal candelabras, and vintage champagne towers.

Over two hundred of Los Angeles’s wealthiest executives, venture capitalists, and socialites filled the room.

At the center of the head table sat a massive, gilded banner: CONGRATULATIONS MASON & CLAIRE.

Mason stood near the entrance, looking radiant in a custom tuxedo, holding a glass of Dom Pérignon and holding court with several high-profile investors from Vanguard Apex.

When I walked through the double doors, wearing an exquisite, floor-length crimson silk gown by Valentino with my hair falling in glossy waves over my bare shoulders, the room briefly quieted.

Mason’s eyes widened. He rushed over, grabbing my hand and pulling me into the center of the floor.

“You look breathtaking, Claire,” he whispered, his eyes gleaming with pride—not for me, but for the image I provided. “Look at this room. Look at these people. We finally made it.”

“You did this, Mason,” I said, smiling with devastating sweetness. “You earned every single thing coming to you tonight.”

Evelyn Vale appeared out of the crowd, dressed in a glittering silver gown, holding a glass of champagne. Her eyes flashed with triumph and covert mockery as she looked at me.

“Claire, darling!” Evelyn beamed, wrapping her arms around me in a tight, suffocating embrace. “Welcome to your celebration! Isn't Mason simply extraordinary? When he told me about his career breakthrough, I knew we had to host this for you both.”

“You are too generous, Evelyn,” I replied smoothly, pulling back. “Few women would go to such lengths for another woman’s fiancé.”

Evelyn’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, a flicker of unease passing through her eyes before she smoothed it over with a laugh. “Well, we must support true ambition, mustn't we?”

At that moment, the double doors of the ballroom swung open once more.

A hush fell over the entire room.

Adrian Vale walked in.

He was alone, dressed in an impeccably tailored black suit, exuding an aura of absolute, terrifying power. The crowd parted naturally before him like the Red Sea.

Mason stiffened instantly, his face draining of color. “What is he doing here? He wasn't supposed to attend.”

“Adrian is your CEO, Mason,” I murmured, squeezing his arm gently. “Surely you wanted your boss to see your greatest triumph?”

Adrian walked directly to our table. He looked at Mason, then at Evelyn, and finally let his gaze rest on me, his gray eyes burning with cold amusement.

“Adrian,” Evelyn said, her voice tightening with nervous tension. “I didn't think you would make it.”

“I wouldn't miss the celebration of Mason’s... unprecedented career move,” Adrian said smoothly, raising an empty glass from the table. “In fact, the board of directors was so impressed by today’s developments that we have scheduled an extraordinary shareholder meeting for tomorrow morning at eight o'clock sharp.”

Mason’s chest puffed out with sudden, arrogant relief. “An extraordinary meeting, Mr. Vale? To discuss the AeroGrid transition?”

“Precisely, Mason,” Adrian smiled—a slow, lethal smile that sent a shiver through the room. “To settle every single account once and for all. Enjoy your evening. Drink deeply. Because tomorrow morning... the reality of what you have built will become abundantly clear.”

Adrian turned, his eyes locking with mine for one burning second, before walking toward the private lounge.

Mason watched him leave, letting out a breathless, arrogant laugh. “Did you hear that? The board meeting is tomorrow! He knows he lost! He’s conceding!”

I looked at Mason, at the man who had traded seven years of loyalty for a poisoned chalice.

“Drink your champagne, Mason,” I said, raising my glass to his. “Tomorrow is going to be the most important day of your life.”
