Chapter 4 - The Extravagant Charity Gala Where Two Traitors Thought They Owned the World

The annual Children’s Hospital Benefit Gala at the Beverly Hills Hotel was the crown jewel of the autumn social calendar.
The grand ballroom was a cathedral of crystal chandeliers, cascading white orchids, and towering ice sculptures, filled with California’s political elite, tech moguls, and old-money dynasties.
Mason was practically vibrating with excitement as he adjusted his tuxedo bowtie in the grand foyer mirror.
“You look nice, Claire,” he muttered distractedly, barely glancing at the midnight-blue silk gown I had chosen for the evening. His eyes were constantly scanning the crowd above my head. “Listen, tonight is critical. Evelyn mentioned that her father’s partners from Vanguard Apex might be floating around the VIP lounge. If I can secure a five-minute conversation with them, it changes everything for us.”
“Does it?” I asked calmly, smoothing the fabric of my dress. “I thought you were entirely dedicated to Adrian’s vision.”
Mason let out a quiet, condescending chuckle, resting his hand on the small of my back—a touch that made my skin crawl beneath the silk. “Adrian is brilliant, baby, but he’s old school. He’s too conservative with international acquisitions. In this business, if you don't jump when the window opens, you get left behind with the worker bees.”
“And you're not a worker bee?”
“Not anymore,” he smirked, leaning down to kiss my cheek. His breath smelled of expensive scotch and the distinct, cloying undertone of Evelyn’s perfume. “Just smile, look pretty, and let me handle the corporate politics tonight.”
Look pretty and smile.
For seven years, I had edited his executive summaries, managed our joint finances, and covered his rent during his unpaid internships. Now, to him, I was merely an accessory for his black-tie ambition.
“Of course, Mason,” I said sweetly. “Go conquer the world.”
As Mason eagerly pushed his way toward the bar, I felt a presence materialize at my side.
Adrian Vale stepped into the periphery of the foyer, looking devastatingly handsome in a custom midnight-black Tom Ford tuxedo. His hair was impeccably styled, his posture commanding immediate, unconscious deference from the wealthy patrons passing around him.
Beside him stood Evelyn Vale, a vision of icy perfection in an emerald-green haute couture gown draped in millions of dollars worth of Harry Winston emeralds.
Evelyn caught Mason’s eye across the ballroom floor. A subtle, clandestine smirk passed between them—a silent, arrogant acknowledgment of their shared secret.
Then, Adrian’s eyes met mine across the glittering room.
There was no smirk on Adrian's face. Just a slight, deliberate inclination of his head. The game was officially live.
Ten minutes later, as the guests took their seats for the keynote address, Evelyn glided over to the cocktail table where I was standing alone, holding a glass of champagne.
“Claire, darling,” Evelyn purred, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness as she leaned in for a socialite air-kiss. “You look... so sensible tonight. That dress is such a lovely, practical color.”
“Thank you, Evelyn,” I replied, taking a slow sip of champagne. “I find that practicality often outlasts expensive illusions.”
Evelyn’s emerald eyes sharpened slightly. “Mason has been doing extraordinary work for Adrian lately. Truly impressive. My husband rarely compliments junior staff, but he mentioned Mason’s drive just yesterday over breakfast.”
“Did he?” I asked, smiling with razor-sharp composure. “Adrian strikes me as a man who watches everything and forgives nothing.”
Evelyn let out a tinkling laugh, brushing a diamond earring with her manicured fingers. “Men like Adrian are powerful, Claire, but they are rigid. They build empires, but they don't know how to keep what belongs to them. The world moves fast. Sometimes, you have to trade up before the market crashes.”
“Is that your philosophy, Evelyn? Trading up?”
“It's not philosophy, darling. It's evolution.” Evelyn leaned closer, her smile turning entirely predatory. “You should hold onto Mason tightly. A man with his ambition won't stay in a small pond for long.”
Before I could answer, a deep, resonant voice cut through the air behind us.
“Evelyn. The Governor is asking for you at Table One.”
Adrian stepped forward, his towering frame instantly dominating the space between us. He didn't look at his wife; his gaze was fixed entirely on me.
“Adrian,” Evelyn said smoothly, recovering her mask instantly. “I was just telling Claire how much potential her fiancé has.”
“Ms. Donovan is well aware of potential,” Adrian said, his voice smooth as aged whiskey. “She is also an expert at identifying liabilities before they cause catastrophic structural failure.”
Evelyn frowned, sensing an undercurrent she couldn't quite decipher. “Well... don't stay away from the main table too long, Adrian.” She turned and swayed gracefully back toward the VIP section.
The moment she was out of earshot, Adrian leaned down slightly, his shoulder brushing against mine.
“Did you plant the flash drive in Mason’s briefcase before leaving the house?” he murmured.
“Yes,” I whispered back, my heart pounding with adrenaline. “The encrypted server clone with the altered bidding algorithms for AeroGrid. If he uploads it to Vanguard Apex’s server tonight, the digital watermark will register directly to his personal IP address and Evelyn’s private offshore cloud.”
“Excellent,” Adrian murmured, his gray eyes locking onto mine with an electric intensity that made my breath hitch. “He is about to take the bait. Mason just stepped out onto the terrace with Evelyn’s father’s lead broker.”
I looked toward the glass French doors leading out to the moonlit terrace. Through the glass, I could see Mason furiously typing on his encrypted tablet, a greedy, triumphant grin plastered across his face.
He had no idea that the document he was currently uploading was a legal death warrant designed by the woman he had promised to marry.
May you like
Adrian reached out, his warm fingers brushing against my bare arm as he handed me a fresh glass of champagne.
“Drink up, Claire,” he whispered, his voice sending a thrilling shiver down my spine. “The countdown to their destruction has officially begun.”
