Chapter 14 - The Final Courtroom Verdict and the Rebirth of Donovan Legal

Six months later, the Central District Federal Courthouse of Los Angeles was packed for the final sentencing hearing of United States v. Mason Reed.
I sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing an elegant ivory pantsuit, holding Adrian’s hand.
Across the aisle, the federal prosecutor concluded his final remarks.
Judge Robert Vance looked down from the bench with stern, unyielding eyes at Mason, who stood at the defense table dressed in bright orange prison scrubs and heavy wrist chains.
“Mr. Reed,” Judge Vance declared, his voice booming through the courtroom. “Your actions demonstrated an extraordinary level of calculated greed, professional betrayal, and gross violation of federal law. You attempted to enrich yourself by destroying the livelihoods of thousands of hardworking citizens.”
Mason kept his head bowed, weeping silently.
“On Counts One through Four—Corporate Espionage and Wire Fraud—this court sentences you to nine years and six months at the Federal Correctional Institution in Lompoc, followed by three years of supervised release and full restitution of seven million dollars.”
The gavel slammed down. Bang.
Mason was led away by federal marshals, never once turning to look at the gallery.
As we walked out of the courthouse into the bright California sunshine, dozens of reporters and cameras swarmed the steps.
“Mr. Vale! Mr. Vale! Is it true that Vale Meridian has just appointed Donovan Law Group as its primary global corporate litigation firm?”
Adrian stopped on the courthouse steps, turning to face the cameras with a proud, radiant smile—the smile the media had claimed he never possessed.
He wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling me close before the flashing lenses.
“Donovan Law Group is an independent, world-class legal institution led by the most brilliant legal mind in this country,” Adrian announced clearly into the microphones. “And Claire Donovan is not just my primary counsel. She is my partner in every sense of the word.”

The crowd erupted in questions and camera flashes, but Adrian simply looked down at me, his eyes full of devotion, and led me down the steps toward our waiting car.
We had survived the fire, and together, we had built an unshakeable dynasty.
