Chapter 7 - The Trap Is Sprung: Letting Them Steal the Poisoned Golden Apple

At nine o'clock the following morning, inside a glass-walled boardroom on the fifty-second floor of the Transamerica Pyramid, the trap was officially sprung.
The Chairman of AeroGrid Dynamics, Arthur Sterling, signed the final page of the merger agreement, handing the gold fountain pen to Adrian.
“It’s done, Adrian,” Sterling smiled, shaking Adrian’s hand. “Vale Meridian owns eighty-five percent of AeroGrid’s voting shares and every single one of our underlying quantum energy patents. Effective immediately.”
“Thank you, Arthur,” Adrian said calmly. “Ensure the regulatory filings are sealed under non-disclosure until twelve o'clock sharp.”
“Understood.”
I stood beside the window, watching the San Francisco fog roll over the bay. On my encrypted tablet, a live alert popped up from our surveillance network in Los Angeles.
Target Mason Reed has initiated a high-frequency wire transfer from Vanguard Apex to AeroGrid’s former shell entity.
“Adrian,” I called out, turning the screen toward him. “Mason just pulled the trigger. Vanguard Apex just transferred two hundred and fifty million dollars into the decoy acquisition account.”
Adrian walked over, looking down at the numbers with cold, surgical detachment.
“Mason believes he just front-ran my bid,” Adrian murmured. “He thinks Vanguard Apex now controls AeroGrid’s patents. In reality, he just transferred a quarter of a billion dollars of Evelyn’s family fund into a blind escrow account owned entirely by Vale Meridian’s debt-recovery subsidiary.”
“He just committed grand larceny and securities fraud on a federal level,” I said, the gravity of the moment settling over me.
“And he did it using his own digital signature and Evelyn’s personal authorization codes,” Adrian replied. “They are officially trapped in the cage they built for us.”
Suddenly, my phone rang in my purse.
The caller ID displayed a smiling photo of Mason.
Adrian gave me a slight nod. “Answer it. Put it on speaker.”
I swiped the screen and brought the phone to my ear, keeping my voice light and unsuspecting. “Hello, Mason?”
“Claire! Baby!” Mason’s voice was practically shaking with manic, triumphant adrenaline. “Where are you? I’m at the office. Big, incredible news!”
“I’m just finishing up a deposition in Century City,” I lied smoothly. “What happened?”
“I did it!” Mason practically screamed through the speaker. “The AeroGrid deal—it’s over! Adrian completely miscalculated the bidding timeline. Another fund scooped the entire asset out from under him, and Adrian’s acquisition strategy just collapsed! The board is going to hold an emergency meeting tomorrow morning to address the executive failure!”
“Oh, Mason... that sounds terrible for Adrian,” I said, locking eyes with Adrian, who stood two feet away with his arms crossed, an amused smirk playing on his lips.
“Terrible for him, but amazing for us!” Mason laughed ecstatically. “The incoming fund already reached out to offer me the Senior Vice Presidency! We’re celebrating tonight, Claire. Evelyn is hosting our formal engagement dinner at the Bel-Air Country Club tonight to announce my promotion to her social circle!”
My heart turned to ice. “An engagement party? Tonight?”
“Yes! Evelyn insisted! She said we deserve to be celebrated by the real power players of Los Angeles. Wear your best gown, baby. Tonight, everyone in this city will know who Mason Reed is!”
“I'll be there, Mason,” I said softly. “I wouldn't miss it for the world.”
I hung up the phone.
The study fell dead silent.
“An engagement party,” I murmured, a chilling smile spreading across my lips. “They are so arrogant that they are throwing a party to celebrate my betrayal in front of the entire city.”
May you like
Adrian stepped closer, his eyes glowing with an electric, lethal brilliance.
“Then let’s give them a celebration they will never forget.”
