Chapter 12 - The Desperate Midnight Plea and the Threat That Crossed the Line

Three weeks after the boardroom reckoning, Los Angeles had returned to a calm, steady rhythm.

The legal fallout had been swift and decisive. Vanguard Apex had collapsed into bankruptcy, Evelyn’s family had fled to Europe to avoid secondary civil litigation, and Mason Reed was currently being held without bail at the Metropolitan Detention Center awaiting federal trial on multiple felony counts.

I had returned to my private practice, but everything had changed.

The two-million-dollar retainer check from Adrian had allowed me to buy out my toxic partners, lease a stunning top-floor office suite in Century City, and establish Donovan Law Group as an independent powerhouse specializing in forensic asset protection.

At 10:00 PM on a cool Tuesday evening, I walked out of my new office building toward the subterranean executive parking garage.

As I approached my car, a shadow detached itself from behind a concrete pillar.

“Claire.”

I gasped, dropping my car keys as I spun around, my heart leaping into my throat.

Mason stood there.

He looked unrecognizable. He had posted bail through a predatory bondsman that morning. He was wearing rumpled, stained clothes, his face hollow, pale, and covered in uneven stubble. His eyes were bloodshot and wild with desperation.

“Mason,” I breathed, taking two rapid steps backward. “Stay away from me. I have a restraining order against you.”

“Claire, please, just listen to me for two minutes!” Mason pleaded, stepping closer with his hands raised. “They're going to send me to prison for ten years! The lawyers told me today that unless Vale Meridian drops the civil damages claim, the judge won't accept a plea deal!”

“You committed federal crimes, Mason! You tried to steal my life savings!”

“I’ll pay it back! I’ll work three jobs, I’ll do whatever you want!” Mason broke down, dropping to his knees on the cold concrete, sobbing violently. “Claire, look at me! It’s Mason! We spent seven years together! You can't let Adrian Vale destroy me like this! You have his ear—tell him to drop the civil complaint!”

I looked down at him, feeling a deep, profound sense of closure. The man on his knees wasn't the man I had loved; he was a ghost of a selfish, weak boy who had gambled his soul and lost.

“No, Mason,” I said quietly. “You made your choices. Now you have to face the consequences.”

Mason’s expression instantly twisted from pathetic pleading to ugly, violent rage. He scrambled to his feet, lunging forward with bared teeth. “You selfish bitch! You planned this with him! You were sleeping with him the whole time, weren't you? You set me up!”

Before Mason’s hands could reach my coat, a powerful hand gripped Mason’s collar from behind and slammed him violently against the concrete pillar.

Thud.

Adrian Vale stood there, his eyes burning with absolute, murderous fury. His forearm was pressed against Mason’s throat, pinning him effortlessly against the concrete.

Two private security guards flanked Adrian instantly, their hands resting on their holstered weapons.

“If you ever come within one hundred yards of Claire Donovan again,” Adrian whispered, his voice vibrating with a terrifying, lethal darkness that made Mason whimpering with fear, “I will personally ensure that your bail is revoked tonight, and that you serve every single consecutive month of your sentence in maximum security. Do you understand me?”

Mason nodded frantically, tears of terror streaming down his face.

Adrian released him, and Mason collapsed to the floor, gasping for air.

“Get him out of my sight,” Adrian ordered the security guards.

The guards hauled Mason away, his feet dragging across the concrete for the final time.

Adrian turned to me, his harsh expression instantly softening into deep, tender concern. He walked over, wrapping his arms around me and pulling me tightly against his broad chest.

“Are you hurt?” he murmured into my hair, his heart beating strongly against mine.

“I’m fine,” I whispered, resting my head against his shoulder, feeling completely safe for the first time in years. “How did you know I was here?”

“I told you, Claire,” Adrian said softly, kissing the top of my head. “I protect what is precious to me. Always.”
