Chapter 10 - SECRETS IN THE ARMORED CABIN

The SUV tore through Chicago’s rain-slicked streets.
Inside the climate-controlled cabin, Rebecca clutched her backpack tightly to her chest.
Her mother’s diary was safe.
So was her life—for the moment.
She turned her furious gaze toward Roman.
“Your security is a joke,” she snapped, wiping soot from her cheek.
“Your father’s enemies knew where I was because your men were watching me.”
Roman sat in the opposite leather seat, reloading his pistol magazine with calm precision.
“You’re right,” Roman admitted without hesitation.
“There’s a mole in my inner circle.”
“And until I find out who leaked my location to Morena, nobody is safe.”
“Including you.”
“Why didn't you leave me behind in the apartment?” Rebecca asked, her voice dropping an octave.
“You could have taken the diary and left me to Morena.”
Roman stopped reloading.
He looked up, meeting her gaze squarely.
“Because my father destroyed your family, Rebecca.”
“The least I can do is make sure mine doesn't finish the job.”
The sincerity in his voice caught Rebecca off guard.
She looked away, staring out the tinted window as downtown skyscrapers blurred into gray towers.
“Where are we going?” she asked quietly.

“To the only place Morena’s men won't dare breach,” Roman replied.
“The ancestral Costa estate on the lake.”
