Chapter 5 - THE RESTAURANT CONNECTION

Leo gasped for breath against the refrigerator.

“What the hell are you doing in my apartment?” Rebecca shouted, her finger trembling on the trigger.

“I... I was looking for the envelope,” Leo stammered.

“What envelope?”

“The one the men in suits dropped at the diner tonight!”

Rebecca’s brow furrowed.

“What men?”

“After you left,” Leo wiped sweat from his forehead.

“Two guys in black suits came looking for the waitress who helped old Mrs. Costa.”

“They said if I found out where you lived, they’d pay off my gambling debts.”

Rebecca lowered the gun by a fraction of an inch.

“Why would Roman Costa’s enemies be looking for me?”

“They aren't Costa’s men, Rebecca,” Leo whispered, his eyes wide with terror.

“They were looking for the ledger.”

“What ledger?”

“The one your mother stole twenty years ago before she died.”

The room spun around Rebecca.

Her mother’s voice echoed in her memory from a childhood she barely remembered.

“Never trust a man with a silver ring, Emma.”

Her mother’s real name wasn't Davis.

And she hadn't died of a natural illness in a quiet hospital bed.

The truth dropped onto Rebecca like a physical blow.

Her mother hadn't hidden from debt collectors.

She had hidden from Roman Costa’s father.
