Chapter 13 - THE TURN OF THE TIDE

Rebecca didn't hesitate.

She launched herself from behind the bookshelf like a striking panther.

She hurled the heavy brass candlestick with all her might.

It struck Marcus squarely across the temple with a sickening crunch.

Marcus staggered sideways, his rifle discharging into the ceiling as plaster rained down.

Roman moved instantly.

He vaulted across the mahogany desk, tackling Marcus to the marble floor.

A flurry of brutal, silent blows ended the struggle in seconds.

Marcus slumped unconscious against the floorboards.

Roman stood up, wiping blood from his knuckle, breathing heavily.

He looked at Rebecca with undisguised shock and awe.

“Remind me never to make you angry,” Roman murmured.

“Just focus on the traitor,” Rebecca panted, her hands shaking.

“Morena’s men will be here in sixty seconds.”

Roman sprinted to the steel safe, punched in a six-digit code, and pulled out a thick manila envelope sealed with red wax.

“The confession,” Roman said, handing it to Rebecca.

“Put this in your backpack.”

“What about you?”

“I’m going to meet Morena on his own terms,” Roman said, drawing a backup shotgun from the wall rack.

“Stay with my mother in the panic room.”

“No,” Rebecca said firmly, stepping in front of the door.

“My mother died for this truth.”

“I’m finishing it with you.”

Roman looked into her eyes, saw the unwavering steel in her gaze, and nodded once.

“Stay behind me,” he ordered.

“Always.”
