Chapter 12 - THE BETRAYAL WITHIN

Red emergency backup lights flickered on, casting a bloody glow across the mahogany furniture.
“They breached the perimeter,” Roman hissed, drawing his weapon.
“That’s impossible,” Clara said, her voice shaking slightly for the first time.
“The security codes were changed this morning.”
Roman’s face turned to stone.
“Only one person besides me had those codes.”
He turned slowly toward the heavy oak study doors.
Footsteps echoed down the hallway.
Slow.
Deliberate.
The doors swung open.
Standing in the threshold was Marcus, Roman’s most trusted head of security, holding an assault rifle aimed directly at Roman’s chest.
“I’m sorry, Boss,” Marcus said without a shred of remorse.
“Morena offered me the entire western shipping docks.”
“Loyalty doesn't pay the bills.”
Roman didn't flinch.
His gray eyes remained dangerously calm.
“You sold out your own blood for a shipping dock, Marcus?”
“Business is business, Roman,” Marcus sneered, tightening his grip on the trigger.
“Hand over the diary and the safe combination.”
“Or I turn your mother into swiss cheese.”
Rebecca’s heart leaped into her throat.
She slid her hand quietly into her backpack, her fingers closing around the heavy iron candlestick she had grabbed from the hallway table.
Marcus kept his rifle trained squarely on Roman.

He never even looked at the waitress standing by the dark bookshelf.
That was his fatal mistake.
