Chapter 9 - THE ATTACK AT DAWN

Thick white smoke filled the apartment in seconds.

Coughing, Rebecca covered her mouth with her sleeve.

Heavy boots pounded against the hallway stairs outside.

“They found us,” Roman hissed, drawing a suppressed pistol from his shoulder holster with lightning speed.

“How did they track you here?” Rebecca choked out through the smoke.

“My car has a backup tracker,” Roman cursed under his breath.

“Morena’s men must have intercepted the signal.”

Automatic gunfire chewed through the apartment door.

Wood splinters rained down like confetti.

Roman grabbed Rebecca by the arm, hauling her up from the floor.

“We’re not staying here to be executed,” he said, kicking open the kitchen window leading to the fire escape.

“Go!”

Rebecca scrambled out onto the metal grating just as two masked gunmen kicked the front door wide open.

Roman fired twice back into the smoke, dropping the first attacker instantly.

He leaped through the window behind Rebecca, pulling the metal latch shut.

They scrambled down the rusted stairs into the alleyway as sirens wailed in the distance.

A black armored SUV idled at the alley exit, its rear door already open.

Roman shoved Rebecca inside and dove in after her.

“Drive!” Roman commanded the driver.

The SUV surged forward, smashing through a wooden barrier just as Morena’s enforcers swarmed the alley.
