Chapter 7 - FACE TO FACE IN THE KITCHEN

Rebecca unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door open.
“You’re hard to find, Miss Davis,” Roman said smoothly.
“I don't like visitors,” Rebecca replied, blocking the doorway.
Roman looked past her into the small apartment.
His eyes lingered on the overturned chair in the kitchen.
“Someone was here last night.”
“Just a rat.”
“A rat with a tactical jacket and a suppressed pistol?”
Roman raised an eyebrow.
“Word travels fast in this neighborhood.”
“Why are you here, Mr. Costa?”
Roman stepped forward, forcing Rebecca to retreat into the apartment.
He closed the door behind him with a soft click.
“My mother insists on thanking you properly.”
“Tell her she’s welcome.”
“She invited you to dinner at the estate tonight.”
Rebecca let out a harsh, humorless laugh.
“Dinner with the mafia boss? Pass.”
Roman’s expression hardened.
“It wasn't a request, Rebecca.”
“My mother rarely takes no for an answer.”
“And neither do I.”
Roman stepped closer, towering over her.
“Besides, Viktor Morena’s men were spotted outside your apartment building twenty minutes ago.”
“You aren't safe here.”
Rebecca’s pulse spiked.
She reached behind her back, her fingers brushing the strap of her backpack containing her mother’s diary.
“You know who I am, don't you?” Rebecca whispered.
Roman went completely still.
The air in the room grew heavy and cold.
“I know you helped my mother,” Roman said quietly.
“And I know someone is hunting you.”
“Not me,” Rebecca corrected him, her voice cracking with suppressed rage.
“They’re hunting the daughter of Joanne Hughes.”
May you like
Roman’s eyes widened by a fraction of an inch.
The name hit him like a physical blow.
