Chapter 6 - An Ambush in the Mediterranean Fog

Gio didn't hesitate. Leaving Matteo to keep watch over the ballroom, Gio and Isadora slipped through a discreet service entrance and headed up the private stairwell toward the hotel's executive suites.
The corridor was shrouded in heavy silence, thick carpet muffling their footsteps.
“Room 404,” Isadora whispered, pulling a compact data-decryption device from her small clutch. “His private terminal is linked to the Swiss servers. Once I override his credentials with my father’s master cipher, all the fraudulent transactions will be rerouted and locked into a public ledger.”
Suddenly, Gio’s arm shot out, slamming her flat against the wall just as a suppressed gunshot splintered the doorframe where her head had been a second earlier.
Pfft! Pfft!
Two Moretti hitmen in tactical gear rounded the corner, submachine guns raised.
Gio didn't flinch. In a fraction of a second, his custom Beretta was in his hand. He fired twice with terrifying precision. Both men dropped instantly to the carpet.
“They knew we were coming,” Gio growled, stepping over the bodies and clearing the corner.
“Arturo didn't go to the terminal—he staged a decoy!” Isadora realized, adrenaline flooding her veins. “He wanted us isolated upstairs!”
Suddenly, the fire alarm blared, red emergency lights flashing down the hallway. Smoke began pouring through the vents. From the end of the corridor, three more armed men appeared, cutting off their retreat to the stairs.
“Window!” Gio barked, grabbing Isadora by the hand and kicking open the door to Suite 402.
The suite opened onto a wide stone balcony overlooking the rocky cliffs and the private marina two hundred feet below. A thick coastal fog had rolled in from the sea, obscuring everything in milky white.
Bullets shattered the suite’s glass doors, raining deadly shards across the room.
Gio returned fire, taking down another assailant, but they were pinned. “Matteo and Luca are cut off by Moretti’s men in the lobby,” Gio said calmly, reloading his magazine without taking his eyes off the door. “We have one magazine left.”
Isadora looked around the room, her analytical mind working at lightning speed. She spotted the heavy velvet drapery ropes and the reinforced wrought-iron railing of the balcony.
“Give me your belt and the curtain cord!” she demanded.
Gio raised an eyebrow even as gunfire chewed through the wall beside them. “Are we redecorating?”
“Do you trust me or not, Rossi?”
Gio stripped his leather belt in a fluid motion and tossed it to her while firing three suppressive shots down the hall.
Isadora looped the heavy braided cord through the balcony railing and secured it with a sailor’s hitch knot she had learned as a child on her father's yacht, securing Gio's heavy leather belt as a makeshift harness.
“There’s a utility maintenance ledge ten feet down, leading to the cliff service elevator,” she said, looking over the edge into the swirling mist. “We jump together.”
Gio stepped onto the balcony, looked at the flimsy cord, then looked at Isadora. A wild, reckless grin touched his lips.
“If this snaps, Vance, I’m haunting you in hell.”
“Hold on to me,” she commanded.
Gio wrapped his powerful arms tightly around her waist, pulling her against his chest, shielding her body with his own. With a single, synchronized leap, they threw themselves over the balustrade into the void.
The rope caught with a violent jerk, muscles screaming under the strain, but the knot held. They swung through the dense fog, slamming their feet against the stone ledge below just as an explosion ripped through the suite above them, sending a ball of orange fire into the night sky.
They landed hard on the narrow maintenance platform. Gio instantly rolled, keeping Isadora protected beneath him.
They were breathing heavily, their faces inches apart in the cold fog, hearts pounding in unison like war drums. Gio looked down at her, his eyes wild with adrenaline, pride, and an undeniable, overwhelming passion.
“You’re completely insane, Isadora,” he breathed, his voice thick with raw emotion.
May you like
“And you’re still alive because of me,” she replied breathless, her hands clutching his broad shoulders.
Gio didn't answer with words. He leaned down and captured her lips in a fierce, demanding kiss.
