Chapter 5 - Shadows, Silk, and Silent Pacts

The Grand Hotel Excelsior in Sorrento was an opulent palace of gilded mirrors, crystal chandeliers, and marble balustrades overlooking the moonlit Bay of Naples. The air inside the ballroom was thick with the scent of expensive perfume, Cuban cigars, and lethal ambition.
The elite of Italy’s underworld and high society mingled, clinking champagne glasses, unaware of the storm about to break.
When the double doors opened, the master of ceremonies announced: “Don Giovanni Rossi and his betrothed, Lady Isadora Vance.”
A sudden hush fell over the three hundred guests.
Gio entered like an emperor of darkness, dressed in a custom midnight-black tuxedo that emphasized his broad shoulders and commanding presence. But every eye in the room instantly drifted to the woman on his arm.
Isadora looked magnificent. She wore an emerald-green silk gown with a daring backless cut and a slit that revealed her long, elegant legs. Her dark hair was styled into intricate, glossy waves cascading over one bare shoulder. Around her neck hung not the tarnished silver locket, but a diamond-encrusted choker displaying the historic Vance crest.
She held her head high, radiating untouchable elegance and sovereign power.
Arturo Rossi, standing near the champagne fountain with Don Moretti, nearly dropped his glass. The color drained from his face as his eyes locked onto Isadora’s signet ring and the choker.
“She’s alive?” Moretti hissed under his breath to Arturo. “You told me Lorenzo Vance’s bloodline was extinguished!”
“She was a waitress yesterday!” Arturo choked out, sweat beading on his forehead. “This is a trick! Gio is desperate!”
Across the room, Gio leaned down, his lips brushing against Isadora’s ear, making a delicious shiver run down her spine. “You have Arturo sweating through his thousand-euro collar. Half the Dons are terrified just looking at you.”
“Good,” she murmured, keeping a dazzling, icy smile plastered on her face for the cameras and onlookers. “Let them remember who built the vaults they keep their blood money in.”
“You look breathtaking, Isadora,” Gio whispered, his tone suddenly deep, genuine, and devoid of mockery.
Isadora’s breath hitched slightly. She looked up into his dark eyes and saw something far more dangerous than syndicate violence—a raw, consuming hunger that made her heart race against her ribs.
“Careful, Don Rossi,” she countered softly. “This engagement is a business transaction. Don't lose your focus.”
“I have never been more focused in my life,” he replied, his large hand tightening possessively around her waist as he guided her toward the center of the ballroom for the traditional opening waltz.
The orchestra began to play a dark, sweeping Italian waltz.
Gio pulled her flush against his chest. His strength was overwhelming, but his movements were surprisingly graceful, commanding, and fluid. As they spun beneath the glittering chandeliers, every eye followed them.
“You dance well for an executioner,” she remarked, feeling the heat of his body through the thin silk of her dress.
“My father believed a Don should master every art,” Gio said, his eyes never leaving hers. “Warfare, finance, diplomacy... and knowing how to hold a woman who could easily put a knife through his heart.”
“Would you stop me if I tried?”
“I’d let you try,” Gio murmured, dipping her low over the marble floor before pulling her back up, their faces inches apart. “Just to see how close you’d have to get.”
Before she could answer, a high-frequency buzz vibrated against the miniature earpiece concealed in her ear.

Luca’s voice crackled through: “Miss Vance, the bait worked. Arturo just excused himself to the VIP suites upstairs. He's accessing the offshore terminal to reroute twenty million euros before you can freeze the accounts.”
Isadora pulled back slightly, her gaze snapping back to business. “The trap is set,” she whispered to Gio. “It’s time to close the jaws.”
