Chapter 5 - A Bullet in the Rain and Blood on the Asphalt

“Hold on!” Frankie bellowed as he slammed the accelerator. The heavy Mercedes surged forward, its powerful engine roaring as water sprayed off the asphalt.
The first gunshot cracked through the wet night, shattering the rear windshield in a spiderweb of reinforced bulletproof glass. The second SUV pulled alongside them, attempting to pit-maneuver their vehicle into the concrete barrier of the expressway.
“Get down!” Enzo ordered, grabbing Khloe by the shoulder and pulling her flat against the floorboards. He drew a black semi-automatic pistol from beneath his jacket with fluid, deadly precision.
“Is it Sal?” Khloe shouted over the deafening roar of the chase.
“It doesn't matter who pulled the trigger—it matters who pays the price,” Enzo replied coldly.
The side window of the pursuing SUV lowered, revealing a gunman with an automatic rifle aiming directly at their tires. Frankie swerved violently, clipping the front bumper of the enemy vehicle, sending sparks cascading into the darkness.
“Frankie, take the industrial off-ramp!” Enzo commanded. He lowered his window two inches, aimed through the narrow slit, and fired three rapid shots. The front tire of the pursuing SUV exploded, sending the vehicle violently flipping across the highway divider into a burst of metal and smoke.
But the second SUV was still on their tail. As they careened down a dark, abandoned warehouse district near the river, Frankie suddenly groaned. A stray rifle round had pierced the driver's side door panel, grazing Frankie’s shoulder. Blood stained his dark shirt, and the Mercedes slid dangerously toward a row of iron shipping containers before grinding to a halt.
“Frankie!” Khloe gasped, scrambling forward to check his wound.
“I’m fine... just a scratch,” Frankie grunted, though his face had gone pale.
Footsteps splashed through the puddles outside. Three armed hitmen were advancing toward their stalled car. Enzo opened his door, stepping out into the pouring rain with lethal intent.
Gunfire erupted in the narrow alley. Enzo dropped the first man with two center-mass shots, but the second attacker lunged from behind a stack of wooden pallets, tackling Enzo to the wet ground. The heavy gun flew from Enzo's hand, sliding across the wet pavement toward Khloe's side of the car.
The third hitman raised his shotgun, aiming directly at Enzo’s back while Enzo struggled in hand-to-hand combat with the other assailant.
Khloe didn't hesitate. She kicked open her door, stepped into the mud, snatched Enzo's fallen pistol from the asphalt, and raised it with both hands.
Her father had been an avid hunter in the Michigan woods; she had fired rifles since she was twelve.
Crack!
Khloe fired once. The bullet struck the shotgun-wielding hitman in the shoulder, knocking him backward off his feet with a scream of agony.
Enzo capitalized on the distraction, breaking his opponent's neck with a brutal, decisive twist. He rose swiftly, wiping rain and blood from his jaw, and looked at Khloe.
She stood in the pouring rain, her emerald gown soaked and smeared with mud, the smoking gun still steady in her hands.
Enzo walked toward her slowly, taking the weapon gently from her fingers. His eyes held a look she had never seen before—not just admiration, but fierce, unyielding respect.
“You saved my life,” Enzo said softly over the sound of the rain.

“I protect my investments,” Khloe replied, her voice shaking slightly as the shock set in.
Enzo wrapped his heavy wool jacket around her shivering shoulders. “Let's get out of here. Tomorrow, we take down the traitors.”
