Chapter 2 - The Velvet Cage and the Devil's Golden Contract

The morning sun had barely touched the gray skyline of Chicago when a matte-black Mercedes pulled up to Khloe’s rundown apartment building. The neighborhood was known for broken streetlamps, peeling brickwork, and the constant hum of sirens in the distance.

Khloe stood on the curb holding a single battered duffel bag containing her most essential belongings: her father’s pocket watch, a framed photo of her late mother standing under an olive tree in Palermo, and three plain changes of clothes.

The rear door clicked open. Frankie stepped out, towering and solemn in a dark overcoat.

“Miss Bennett,” he rumbled, extending a hand toward the interior. “Mr. Bianke is expecting you.”

Khloe climbed into the plush leather interior. Enzo was already seated on the far side, reviewing documents on a slim tablet. He didn't look up immediately, but the sharp scent of bergamot and cedar filled the cabin. When the car pulled smoothly away from the curb, he shut the tablet and slid a thick black leather folder across the leather seat between them.

“Read it carefully,” Enzo said calmly. “Every page.”

Khloe opened the folder. The first page was a cashier's check made out to Memorial Hospital in the exact amount of $73,420.00—her father’s entire medical debt, stamped PAID IN FULL. Beneath it lay a certified bank ledger showing a freshly opened account in her name with a balance of $50,000.

Her breath caught in her throat. She looked up at him, her fingers tracing the embossed bank seal. “This is real?”

“The Bianke family does not play parlor tricks,” Enzo said, his tone devoid of warmth but entirely serious. “Your debt is erased. Your housing is provided for. Your only employer is me.”

She flipped to the contractual terms. Her official title was listed as Executive Cultural Liaison and Personal Assistant. Beneath that innocent corporate phrasing were strict operational clauses: absolute confidentiality, twenty-four-hour availability, and strict obedience during undercover reconnaissance assignments.

“And if I fail?” Khloe asked, her eyes narrowing. “Or if I decide I want to walk away?”

“You won’t fail,” Enzo said simply. “Because you are smarter than you let the world believe. But understand this, Khloe: in my world, loyalty is the only currency that matters. If you betray my trust, there is nowhere on this continent you can hide.”

“I don't betray people,” Khloe said coldly. “Unlike your capos, I keep my word.”

A flicker of amusement crossed Enzo’s sculpted face. “Good. Because your first test begins tonight.”

The car ascended into the secure underground garage of the St. Regis residences. Khloe was escorted up thirty floors to a private penthouse that overlooked Lake Michigan. The floor-to-ceiling windows revealed an endless expanse of deep blue water. The interior was modern, elegant, and immaculate—soft gray rugs, white marble surfaces, and a wardrobe already filled with designer evening gowns, tailored pantsuits, and silk blouses.

“These were purchased in your exact measurements,” Frankie noted, placing her old duffel bag on the luggage rack in the master bedroom. “Mr. Bianke expects you ready by seven o’clock. Hair, makeup, and attire suitable for high-stakes company.”

Khloe stood in the center of the vast living room, listening to the heavy front door lock behind Frankie. For the first time in five years, she was not suffocating under the weight of bills. Yet, as she looked at her reflection in the glass wall, wearing an Italian silk robe that cost more than six months of her previous rent, she realized she had traded one form of survival for another. She was inside the lion’s den, and her only weapon was her wit.
