Chapter 3 - The Art of Disappearing in Silk and Diamonds

By six-thirty that evening, Khloe looked into the mirror and barely recognized the woman staring back. The exhaustion that had hollowed her cheeks for years had been concealed by expert makeup artistry; her dark chestnut hair was swept up into an intricate, elegant chignon held together with diamond pins. She wore an emerald-green silk gown with an open back and a modest neckline that radiated quiet aristocratic power.
The doorbell chimed. Khloe opened it to find Enzo standing in the hallway, dressed in an impeccably tailored midnight-blue tuxedo. For a split second, his dark eyes widened as he took in her transformation.
“You look like you were born in a villa overlooking Lake Como,” Enzo said, his voice dropping an octave.
“I was born in a two-bedroom apartment behind a dry cleaner,” Khloe countered smoothly. “Clothes don't change who I am.”
“That is precisely why you are valuable,” Enzo replied, offering his arm. “Tonight, the Marcone family is hosting a charity gala at the Drake Hotel. Don Antonio Marcone believes he is expanding his territory into our North Side shipping docks. His lieutenants believe I am coming alone to negotiate. They don't know you. You will pose as my high-society companion.”
“And what is my real objective?” she asked as they entered the private elevator.
“Don Marcone's brother, Salvatore, will be speaking to their overseas logistics contacts from Southern Italy. They speak in dialect so federal agents with wiretaps can't parse the slang. I need to know which port they plan to hit, which night the shipment arrives, and whether Sal—my own capo—is sitting in their pocket.”
Khloe’s heart gave a heavy thud. “Sal? You think Sal is turning against you?”
“In our world, greed makes men reckless,” Enzo said as the elevator reached the lobby. “Sal was humiliated last night. When a dog is kicked, he looks for a new master. Watch him. Listen to everything. If anyone approaches you, play the bored, wealthy heiress who only cares about champagne and art.”
As they stepped into the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel, the room was bathed in golden chandelier light. Dozens of city officials, corrupt judges, and high-ranking syndicate bosses mingled over crystal flutes of vintage Dom Pérignon.
Khloe felt every eye in the room turn toward them the moment Enzo entered. Whispers rippled through the crowd. Enzo’s presence carried the heavy gravity of an apex predator. He kept his hand firmly on the small of Khloe's back, guiding her effortlessly through the elite circle.
“Enzo,” a raspy voice called out. Don Antonio Marcone, an older man with silver hair and a crooked smile, approached them, accompanied by three large bodyguards. “I see you brought beauty to balance your temper tonight.”
“Good evening, Antonio,” Enzo said smoothly, shaking the older man's hand with just enough pressure to signal dominance. “May I introduce Khloe. Khloe, Don Antonio Marcone.”
Khloe offered a delicate, polite smile, tilting her head with practiced disinterest. “Charmed, Don Antonio. Enzo promised the wine here would be worth leaving the apartment for.”
Don Antonio laughed heartily. “A woman of refined taste! Please, enjoy yourselves.”
As Enzo engaged Antonio in a calculated conversation about municipal construction contracts, Khloe subtly drifted toward the marble balcony where two men stood smoking cigars. One of them was Salvatore Marcone; the other was an emissary from Calabria with heavy rings on his fingers.
Khloe leaned against the balcony balustrade, pretending to admire the moonlight reflecting off Lake Michigan, holding her champagne flute loosely.
Behind her, the Calabrian spoke in rapid, gutter-level southern dialect: “The shipment arrives Thursday at midnight at Pier 42. Enzo thinks we are using Pier 18. Sal took three hundred thousand to ensure the security cameras loop on a ten-minute delay. Enzo will be blind.”

Salvatore Marcone chuckled in response: “When the boss gives the order, Enzo Bianke won’t even have time to draw his weapon. Thursday is the end of his dynasty.”
Khloe’s blood ran cold. She took a slow sip of champagne, keeping her breathing utterly steady. Sal had not only betrayed Enzo; he had sold him out for an ambush in forty-eight hours.
