Chapter 9 - Blood on the Marble Floor and A Promise Whispered in the Cold

The tension in the VIP lounge was severed by the sudden, deafening sound of a fire alarm screeching throughout the hotel.

BOOM!

A flashbang grenade exploded near the ballroom’s main electrical panel, plunging the grand hall into total darkness followed by the strobe of emergency red lights. Screams erupted as panic tore through the high-society crowd.

“Ambush!” Santino’s voice bellowed through the earpiece. “Moretti’s rogue faction is moving!”

Before the smoke could clear, gunfire erupted across the marble floor.

Adrian reacted with terrifying, lethal speed. He drew his concealed sidearm, spinning Claire behind his broad frame and pulling her toward the service corridor exit.

“Stay down!” Adrian ordered, firing three precise shots into the darkness, dropping two advancing gunmen who had attempted to cut off their retreat.

Claire gripped the lapels of his tuxedo, her adrenaline surging, but she kept her wits entirely intact. “The kitchen service elevator! It leads directly to the subterranean loading dock!”

“Smart girl,” Adrian grunted, wrapping his left arm around her waist and lifting her over a fallen marble pillar as they sprinted through the double swinging doors of the banquet kitchen.

A third gunman leaped from behind an industrial stainless-steel prep counter, raising a shotgun directly at Claire.

Adrian didn't hesitate. He threw his entire body in front of her, shielding her with his back as the shotgun roared.

BLAM!

Heavy buckshot tore through the left shoulder of Adrian’s tuxedo jacket.

Adrian grunted in pain, but his return fire was instantaneous and brutal. Two double-taps dropped the assailant permanently to the tile floor.

“Adrian!” Claire screamed, catching him as he stumbled against the metal prep station, dark crimson blood immediately soaking through his pristine white shirt and black silk coat.

“I’m fine… I’m fine,” Adrian breathed through clenched teeth, his face pale with pain as he pressed his right hand against his bleeding shoulder. “Keep moving… elevator is twenty feet away.”

Claire took his uninjured arm, supporting his massive weight with every ounce of strength in her body. She kicked off her high heels, running barefoot across the cold kitchen floor, dragging the wounded billionaire into the freight elevator and slamming the emergency close button.

As the heavy steel doors slid shut, sealing them in the humming industrial box, Adrian slumped against the corner, breathing heavily.

Claire dropped to her knees before him, ripping a wide strip of emerald silk from the bottom of her gown without a second thought. She pressed the fabric hard against his bleeding wound, using all her body weight to stanch the flow.

Adrian hissed in agony, his head falling back against the metal wall, but his dark eyes fixed onto hers with an overwhelming, desperate love.

“Look at you…” Adrian whispered, his hand coming up to gently cup her cheek, his thumb brushing away a stray tear. “Ruining a five-thousand-dollar dress to save a monster.”

“You are not a monster, Adrian Vale!” Claire cried softly, her tears spilling freely now as she pressed harder on the bandage. “You took a bullet for me! Do you hear me? You protected me!”

Adrian looked into her emerald eyes, his heart beating with a fierce, unbreakable devotion.

“I would take a thousand bullets for you, Claire,” Adrian whispered, his voice thick with raw emotion. “I would burn the world to ashes just to see you smile once more.”

Unable to bear the distance any longer, Claire leaned forward and pressed her lips against his in a deep, passionate, desperate kiss.

The kiss tasted of copper, adrenaline, and pure, undeniable salvation. Adrian groaned into her mouth, his uninjured arm wrapping tightly around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest as the elevator descended into the safety of the night.
