Chapter 8 - The Gala of Wolves and The Woman Who Commanded the Room in Emerald Silk

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel glittered beneath crystalline chandeliers, filled with Chicago’s most dangerous combination: old-money billionaires, corrupt judges, high-ranking syndicate bosses, and socialites drenched in diamonds.
At 9:00 p.m., the heavy double doors swung open, and the entire ballroom fell into a stunned, collective silence.
Adrian Vale entered the room.
He looked magnificent in a midnight-black Tom Ford tuxedo, his broad shoulders and commanding posture radiating an aura of untouchable supremacy. But what stole the breath from every man and woman in the room was the woman on his arm.
Claire Bennett was a vision of breathtaking elegance.
She wore a custom floor-length emerald green silk gown that clung perfectly to her curves before cascading into a subtle train. The deep jewel tone made her porcelain skin glow and brought out the fiery brilliance of her auburn hair, which was styled in soft, cascading Hollywood waves over one shoulder. She wore no gaudy diamonds—only a pair of delicate emerald teardrop earrings that Adrian had secretly delivered to her dressing room earlier that evening.
She walked with her head held high, her chin lifted, her hand resting gracefully on Adrian’s muscular forearm.
“Look at them staring,” Adrian murmured softly, leaning his head down toward her ear, his breath tickling her skin. “Every man in this room is wondering how a monster like me convinced an angel like you to walk beside him.”
Claire tilted her head, a stunning, confident smile touching her red lips. “Tell them you bought me a very expensive potato dinosaur.”
Adrian let out a low, genuine chuckle, leading her across the polished marble floor toward the elevated VIP lounge where Don Vittorio Moretti sat surrounded by his armed bodyguards.
Vittorio Moretti was seventy years old, with slicked-back silver hair, cold predatory eyes, and a silk handkerchief tucked into his breast pocket. Beside him sat his nephew Dominic, whose left hand was wrapped in heavy medical gauze.
“Adrian,” Vittorio rasped, leaning heavily on a gold-topped cane as he stood to greet them. “You honor us with your presence. And this… this must be the remarkable Miss Claire Bennett.”
Vittorio reached out to take Claire’s hand to kiss it, but before his fingers could make contact, Adrian stepped subtly forward, intercepting the space with an icy, lethal glare that made the old mobster pause.
“Keep your hands to yourself, Vittorio,” Adrian said, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous frequency that caused the surrounding guards to tense. “We are here to settle business, not exchange pleasantries.”
Claire did not shrink back. She met Vittorio’s cold stare with an unblinking, regal composure. “Good evening, Mr. Moretti. I trust your evening is going better than your nephew’s weekend?”
Dominic turned purple with rage, but Vittorio raised a hand, silencing his nephew. The old Don looked at Claire for a long moment, a slow, appreciative smile spreading across his wrinkled face.
“She has fire, Adrian,” Vittorio remarked, taking a sip of his champagne. “A rare quality in women these days. It would be a terrible tragedy if such fire were extinguished by an unfortunate… accident.”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure obsidian. “If you threaten her again, Vittorio, you will not leave this ballroom alive. I have four sniper teams locked onto every exit of this building. Sign the harbor concession treaty tonight, or prepare your family for total eradication.”
Vittorio’s smile vanished, realizing that Adrian was not bluffing. The balance of power had shifted completely.
