Chapter 15 - Vows Carved in Diamond, A Little Boy’s Laughter, and An Untouchable Forever

Spring arrived in Chicago with an explosion of blooming tulips, warm breezes, and brilliant golden sunshine.

The private garden of the Vale Estate in Lake Forest was decorated with thousands of white hydrangeas, pale blue delphiniums, and peach garden roses—the very flowers that had started their journey six months ago.

Soft classical violin music drifted through the fragrant afternoon air as two hundred close friends, family members, and medical staff from Saint Jude’s took their seats beneath the floral arbor.

Standing at the altar in a bespoke black tuxedo was Adrian Vale. His handsome face was radiant with a joy so profound it moved everyone in attendance to tears.

Standing beside him as the best man was little Toby, looking utterly dashing in a matching miniature tuxedo, holding a velvet pillow bearing the wedding rings—with Barnaby the dinosaur sitting proudly in the front row of the guest chairs.

The violin music swelled into Pachelbel’s Canon in D.

The heavy wooden garden gates opened, and Claire Bennett walked down the petal-strewn aisle on the arm of her proud mother.

Claire was an absolute vision of ethereal beauty. Her off-the-shoulder gown of delicate French lace and cascading silk trailed behind her, her auburn hair woven with tiny white blossoms, and her emerald eyes fixed solely on the man waiting for her at the altar.

When she reached the steps, Adrian reached out, taking her trembling hands into his strong, warm palms.

“You look breathtaking,” Adrian whispered, a single tear slipping down his cheek.

“You don't look too bad yourself, Mr. Vale,” Claire smiled through her tears of joy.

The minister smiled warmly. “Do you, Adrian Vale, take Claire Bennett to be your lawfully wedded wife, to love, honor, cherish, and protect, in sickness and in health, for as long as you both shall live?”

“I do,” Adrian vowed, his voice ringing with absolute, eternal devotion.

“And do you, Claire Bennett, take Adrian Vale to be your lawfully wedded husband, to love, honor, cherish, and stand beside, for as long as you both shall live?”

“I do,” Claire whispered, her voice filled with pure love.

Adrian turned to Toby, kneeling down on one knee so he was eye-level with the little boy. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, solid gold medallion engraved with the Vale crest and Toby’s name.

“And do you, Toby Bennett-Vale,” Adrian asked softly, placing the medallion around Toby’s neck, “accept me as your father, your protector, and your teammate for the rest of our lives?”

Toby beamed with a wide, gap-toothed smile, throwing his small arms around Adrian’s neck in a tight, joyful hug. “Yes, Daddy! A thousand times yes!”

The crowd erupted into cheers and joyful applause.

Adrian stood up, lifting Toby in his left arm, and wrapped his right arm around Claire’s waist, pulling his new wife into a breathtaking, passionate kiss beneath the shower of falling peach rose petals.

The locked doors of the past were open forever. The shadows were gone.
