Chapter 10 - The Safehouse in Lake Geneva and The Unraveling of Iron Hearts

The safehouse was a secluded, timber-and-stone lodge hidden deep within the private forests surrounding Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

Surrounded by a ten-foot security perimeter, infrared cameras, and twenty elite guards loyal only to Adrian, the estate was an impenetrable sanctuary.

By Tuesday afternoon, the storm had cleared, leaving the forest bathed in golden autumn sunshine.

Inside the master suite, Adrian sat propped up against a mountain of pillows on the king-sized bed, his left shoulder securely stitched and bandaged by a private surgeon who had departed hours earlier.

Sitting at the foot of the bed, cross-legged and happily eating a bowl of grapes, was Toby.

“And then Barnaby used his super tail to knock over the bad guys!” Toby explained with intense theatrical hand gestures.

Adrian smiled, resting his uninjured arm on his knee. “A very tactical maneuver. Did Barnaby require reinforcements?”

“Nope!” Toby grinned. “Because Mr. Santino gave Barnaby a shiny gold badge!”

Toby proudly held up the plush dinosaur, which now had an official gold security pin attached to its emerald collar.

Claire walked into the bedroom carrying a tray with warm chicken broth and fresh bread. She was dressed in a soft, oversized cream sweater and leggings, her auburn hair falling freely over her shoulders. She looked at the two of them—her son and the most feared man in the Midwest—and felt a peace she hadn't known in a decade.

“Alright, Captain Toby,” Claire announced gently, setting the tray on the bedside table. “It’s time for your afternoon nap with Grandma in the guest cottage. Mr. Adrian needs to rest his shoulder.”

Toby pouted slightly but leaned forward, planting a sticky grape-scented kiss on Adrian’s uninjured cheek. “Feel better, Mr. Adrian. Don't let your potato dinosaur get hurt.”

Adrian’s eyes softened with profound tenderness. “Thank you, buddy. Go get some rest.”

Claire walked Toby to the door, handing him over to her mother, who gave Claire a knowing, supportive smile before leading the boy down the hall.

Claire closed the heavy oak door and turned back to the bed.

She walked over, sat on the edge of the mattress, and picked up the bowl of warm broth. “Eat. Doctor’s orders.”

Adrian caught her wrist gently, his dark eyes searching hers with breathtaking vulnerability. “Claire.”

“Adrian, you need to eat to regain your strength—”

“Claire, marry me.”

The room went completely, perfectly still.

Claire froze, the spoon hovering mid-air. Her breath caught in her throat as she stared at the man before her.

“Adrian…” she whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs. “You’re on pain medication.”

“I have never been clearer in my entire life,” Adrian said, his voice deep, steady, and filled with a solemn, reverent certainty. He reached beneath his pillow and pulled out a small, velvet box he had instructed Santino to retrieve from his private vault in Chicago.

He flipped the lid open with his thumb.

Resting on black velvet was a breathtaking, flawless seven-carat cushion-cut emerald ring, surrounded by a delicate halo of micropavé diamonds.

“I don't want a business contract, Claire,” Adrian whispered, his eyes shining with unshed tears. “I don't want an assistant. I want to spend every sunrise and sunset making sure you and Toby never have to fight another battle alone. I want to legally adopt Toby as my son. I want to give him my name, my protection, and every drop of love in my soul.”

Tears welled up in Claire’s green eyes, spilling over her cheeks in warm, radiant streams.

“You don't have to carry the world on your shoulders anymore, my love,” Adrian said softly, reaching up to stroke her cheek. “Let me carry it with you.”

Claire dropped the spoon, threw her arms gently around Adrian’s uninjured neck, and buried her face in his throat.

May you like

“Yes,” she wept with joy against his skin. “Yes, Adrian. A thousand times yes.”

Adrian closed his eyes, wrapping his strong arm around her waist, pulling her into his heart as the heavy shadows of his past finally dissolved into light.
