Chapter 7 - When the Glass Tower Becomes a Fortress and Secrets Threaten to Ignite

By Monday morning, the executive suite on the forty-third floor of Vale Meridian Holdings had undergone a profound transformation.

Claire stepped out of the private elevator at 8:00 a.m., holding a cup of cinnamon tea in one hand and her leather planner in the other. Toby had been safely discharged to her mother’s secure suburban home in Naperville under around-the-clock protection provided by Santino’s most trusted guards.

As Claire walked through the glass double doors, she paused.

Her desk had been moved.

Instead of sitting in the open reception foyer where visitors and couriers walked past, her massive mahogany workstation had been relocated directly inside Adrian’s private, bullet-resistant glass enclosure, situated adjacent to his grand slate desk.

Resting in the center of her desk was a fresh crystal vase containing a single, perfect peach rose, accompanied by a small card.

Claire set her tea down and picked up the card.

Written in Adrian’s sharp, commanding, yet elegant penmanship were the words:

“Your courage inspires this entire tower. Welcome back, Claire.”

Her heart fluttered with a sweet, dangerous rhythm.

The heavy mahogany door opened, and Adrian stepped in, carrying a stack of financial portfolios. He was dressed in a pristine charcoal three-piece suit, looking every bit the untouchable titan of industry.

Yet the moment his eyes met hers, his sharp features softened instantly.

“Good morning, Claire,” he said, his voice deep and warm. “How is Toby doing in Naperville?”

“He is currently building a mega-fortress out of couch cushions with Barnaby the dinosaur,” Claire replied, unable to stop the bright smile from lighting up her face. “My mother says he hasn't stopped talking about ‘Mr. Adrian’s potato dinosaur’ all weekend.”

Adrian let out a quiet laugh, stepping closer to her desk. “I stand by my artistic interpretation.”

Claire looked down at the desk placement, then met his gaze with raised eyebrows. “Did you really have to move my entire office into your personal sanctuary?”

“Yes,” Adrian said without a shred of hesitation. “Until the Moretti situation is permanently resolved, you do not leave my sight during working hours. If that violates your sense of corporate boundary, you may deduct five hundred dollars from my personal account for emotional distress.”

Claire shook her head, an amused sigh escaping her lips. “You are impossible, Adrian.”

“I am pragmatic,” Adrian countered, his eyes darkening with sudden intensity as he stepped closer, his knuckles lightly brushing against the edge of her desk. “And I am a man who cannot afford to lose the only thing that keeps him human.”

The air between them grew thick with unspoken desire. Claire felt her breath catch as Adrian’s dark eyes dropped to her lips. For eighteen months, they had danced around the invisible barrier between employer and employee. But the events of the weekend had shattered that barrier into dust.

Before Adrian could close the distance, the sharp chime of his secure desk terminal broke the spell.

Santino’s face appeared on the high-definition monitor.

“Boss,” Santino said, his voice grave. “Vittorio Moretti just sent an official summons through the underworld council. He is hosting the annual Autumn Charity Gala at the Drake Hotel on Wednesday night. He has requested your personal attendance to negotiate a peaceful resolution regarding the harbor dispute.”

Adrian straightened up, his professional mask sliding back over his features like hardened steel. “And?”

“The invitation explicitly states,” Santino continued, “that Mr. Vale must bring his ‘new executive partner’ as a guest of honor.”

Adrian’s fists clenched at his sides. “He wants Claire.”

“No,” Claire interrupted, stepping forward to stand beside Adrian, her voice ringing with absolute clarity. “He wants to see if you are weak. He wants to test if I am your liability.”

Adrian turned to her, his jaw tight. “I am not bringing you into a room full of mobsters and corrupt politicians, Claire. It’s a trap.”

May you like

Claire looked him dead in the eye, her emerald gaze blazing with the same fierce courage that had carried her through her son’s darkest hours.

“You protected my son, Adrian,” Claire said firmly. “Now let me stand beside you. We walk into the Drake Hotel together, and we show Vittorio Moretti that we fear no one.”
