Chapter 4 - The Empty Crib and the Stolen Cards

The next morning, the sun broke through the heavy gray clouds, casting a bright, cold light over the snow-covered estate. I woke up to the smell of fresh coffee and bacon.

I dressed Noah in a warm, clean onesie that Grandpa’s staff had washed for me, and walked downstairs. In the dining room, Grandpa Arthur sat at the end of a long mahogany table, surrounded by three men in sharp charcoal suits. Thick binders of financial statements and legal documents were piled between them.

"Ah, Madison," Grandpa said, his expression softening as he saw Noah. "Come, sit. Have some breakfast."

"Grandpa, what is all this?" I asked, sitting down, my eyes wide as I looked at the legal papers.

"This, Madison, is the proof of your family’s crimes," Arthur’s lead attorney, Thomas, said, sliding a folder toward me. "When your grandmother passed, she left a three-million-dollar trust fund solely in your name. Your father, Richard, was named as the custodian until you turned twenty-five, but he had no legal authority to withdraw funds without a certified probate court order."

"But he did?" I asked, my voice shaking.

"He forged your signature on a power of attorney document three weeks after Noah was born," Thomas explained, pointing to a high-resolution scan of a legal contract. "He used that forged document to transfer five hundred thousand dollars from your trust into his real estate firm’s operating account to save his failing business. And your mother, Helen, used your trust’s credit line to pay off Lauren’s luxury credit cards."

The level of calculated betrayal made me dizzy. My own parents had stood in my bedroom, holding my newborn son, while secretly planning how to forge my name to steal my grandmother's legacy.

"They didn't just take the money, Madison," Grandpa Arthur said, his voice dropping into a register that made the hairs on my arms stand up. "They were planning on using your alleged 'stress' and 'mental instability' to file for full custody of Noah. They wanted to declare you unfit so they could control the remainder of the trust forever."

I gasped, clutching Noah closer to my chest. "They wanted to take my baby?"

"Yes," Grandpa said, his eyes burning with a dark, lethal fire. "But they forgot one very important detail. I built the foundation they are standing on. And I can tear it down in a single day."
