Chapter 13 - The Legal Reckoning

The trial of Richard, Helen, and Lauren Vance was a media sensation. The courtroom was packed to capacity, with the local news running daily segments detailing the "Vance Family Will Forgery."

I sat in the front row, holding Noah, with Grandpa Arthur and Marcus beside me.

Richard and Helen sat at the defense table, their hands and feet chained. Lauren sat beside them, her elegant clothes replaced by a simple gray jumpsuit, her face pale and completely stripped of her usual arrogant smirk.

The prosecution’s evidence was absolute. The forged power of attorney, the bank transfers, the boutique security footage, and the federal life insurance filings were presented to the jury.

"The defendants did not just commit financial fraud," the prosecutor said, his voice echoing in the silent room. "They systematically abused, gaslit, and endangered a young single mother and her newborn baby to fund their own lavish lifestyle. They showed no remorse, no pity, and no humanity."

The jury reached a verdict in less than two hours.

"On the count of federal wire fraud, we find the defendants guilty."

"On the count of conspiracy to commit child endangerment, we find the defendants guilty."

The judge looked down at them with a cold, unyielding gaze. "Richard Vance, Helen Vance, you are a disgrace to parenthood. I sentence you to twelve years in a federal penitentiary."

"Lauren Vance, you were an active, willing participant in this conspiracy. I sentence you to five years in a federal facility."

As the bailiffs led them away, Lauren looked back at me, her eyes filled with a desperate, silent plea for mercy.

I simply looked away, hugging my son closer to my chest. The nightmare was finally over.
