Chapter 90 - The Midnight Horizon

Across the vast chamber, the change was instantaneous.

The Regent froze, its sonic blades stalling as the carrier wave collapsed into contradictory harmonic waves. Marco seized the opening, throwing all his remaining strength into a wrenching tackle that snapped the automaton's chassis against the safety rail. With a shriek of tearing metal, the Regent tore free from its umbilical cables and tumbled down into the roaring whirlpool below, swallowed instantly by the black lake water.

On the monitors, the telemetry of forty thousand citizens began to normalize. Across the frozen streets of Chicago, the sapphire nodes went dark. Sleepers collapsed into the snow, groaning, their autonomous nervous systems suddenly freed from the machine's dominion as they woke from the living nightmare.

"We did it," I gasped, rushing to Marco as he collapsed onto the catwalk. I cradled his head, pressing my fingers to his neck. His pulse was ragged, fluttering, his chest mechanism smoking from the massive counter-discharge. "Marco, stay with me. The signal is dead. You freed them."

Luca crawled over, clutching his bleeding arm, a grim smile of triumph on his face. "The Bellini failsafe held. The city is waking up."

Marco weakly opened his eyes, staring up through the shattered glass dome of the crib at the stormy night sky.

Then, the floor beneath us began to vibrate with a frequency that didn't come from the transmitter.

A deep, bone-rattling sonar ping echoed up from the bottom of Lake Michigan—so loud, so immense that it rattled the heavy iron rivets of the stone fortress.

On the main terminal, the amber lights didn't turn green.

Instead, the screen wiped clean, replaced by an unfamiliar, crimson command interface displaying a deep-sea topographic map of the entire Great Lakes basin.

*CARRIER WAVE PHASE 1 TERMINATED,* the synthesized voice announced calmly from the intact sub-level speakers. *BIOLOGICAL NODES SYNCED. TARGET ACQUIRED: ARCHITECTURAL DEPLOYMENT COMPLETED.*

*INITIATING PHASE 2: AWAKEN THE ANCHOR.*

Beneath the crib, miles out in the deepest trench of the lake where no civilian vessel had ever charted, a massive thermal signature blossomed on the radar screen—larger than the Leviathan, larger than any submarine ever built.

Marco’s obsidian heart didn't stop ticking. It suddenly accelerated, its internal gears locking into a brand-new, terrifyingly synchronized pattern that was completely out of his control.

His eyes widened in sheer terror as his own fingers gripped my wrist with crushing force.

"Laura..." he whispered, his blood turning cold. "The blackout wasn't meant to enslave the city. It was a sonar pulse... to guide something home from the abyss."

Out on the pitch-black horizon of Lake Michigan, a mile from where we stood, the frozen water began to rise into a mountain of ice and black water.
