Chapter 61 - The Severed Chamber

*“…ONE.”*
The world inside my chest turned to liquid nitrogen. The severed bio-link did not merely stop my heart; it seized it in an agonizing, calcifying vise. My knees struck the tilting metal floor as my vision fractured into crystalline shards of darkness. Across the flooded compartment, the thick blast door stood like an iron tombstone between me and Marco, its electromagnetic barrier snuffing out our fifty-meter lifeline.
“Fight it, Laura,” Richard Vance said, his voice gliding smoothly into my auditory cortex, unhindered by the roaring water or the howling klaxons. “Do not fight for a dying pulse. Surrender the cadence.”
He stepped off the platform, wading through the rising pool of freezing preservative fluid and lake water. He moved with an eerie, mechanical grace, his limbs unnaturally steady despite the ship groaning and pitching at a thirty-degree list. The white light from the obsidian master unit in his palm flared with blinding brilliance.
The moment he closed the distance to five feet, the suffocating clamp around my ventricles shifted violently. My chest cavity flared with an unnatural, burning rhythm. My stolen pacemaker wasn't dying anymore—it was being forcefully co-opted. The purple hue under my skin flared into a searing, bleached violet.
*“SECONDARY LINK ACQUIRED,”* the computer chimed through the deluge. *“SLAVE UNIT DETECTED. COMMENCING FORCED CARDIAC MERGER.”*
“No!” I gasped, clawing at my sternum as a violent spasm arched my back. “You gave me away… you abandoned me…”
“I planted you,” Richard corrected quietly, his hazel eyes locking onto mine with the sterile curiosity of an anatomist dissecting a preserved frog. “A seed hidden in the soil of the common world until the harvest ripened. Samuel Bellini thought he could hide my prototype inside his flesh and lock his secrets in an antique chair. But blood always recognizes its architect.”
Behind him, Helen dragged herself toward the console, her mouth smeared with red foam. “Richard… the coordinates… take me with you…”
Richard didn't even look at her. Without breaking his stride toward me, he flicked his wrist. The white light in his palm pulsed once, sharp and merciless. A high-pitched squeal ripped through the air, and Helen’s artificial chest plate ruptured outward with a wet, metallic snap. Her eyes rolled back, and she collapsed into the churning black water, discarded without a second thought.
Suddenly, the reinforced blast door groaned. A muffled concussive roar shook the bulkhead, followed by the terrifying screech of metal warping under immense pressure.
*Boom.*
Through the small, reinforced viewport in the blast door, I saw Marco. His face was pale, his lips blue from the sudden cardiac arrest our severed tether had triggered, but his eyes burned with lethal fury. He wasn't using a bypass tool. He had wired a portable breaching charge directly to the electromagnetic lock, holding his own palm against the sparking conduit to ground the detonation.
“Laura!” his voice tore through the speaker system, cracked and ragged. “Get down!”

The blast door blew inward with a deafening roar of fire, shrapnel, and pressurized lake water.
