Chapter 53 - Resonance Tether

Every step we took deeper into the tunnel sent a vibrating chime through my chest cavity.
It was no longer just an electronic pulse; it felt visceral, an ache that resonated deep within my bone marrow. My cardiac monitor buzzed against my ribs, feeding me biometric data that wasn't mine. I could feel Marco’s blood pressure spiking. I could taste the metallic tang of adrenaline flooding his system.
"You're tachycardic," I murmured, leaning against his shoulder as we splashed through the knee-deep sludge.
"Seeing you nearly get vaporized by an aquatic gunboat will do that to a man," he retorted, though he pulled me closer against his flank, absorbing half my weight. "How does the suture feel?"
"Like burning wire," I admitted honestly. "The tissue hasn't fully integrated the obsidian weave yet. If the Council spikes the external frequency, it could trigger an acute rejection crisis."
Suddenly, the conduit cables along the tunnel walls began to hum.
It started as an almost imperceptible drone, like a distant horn trapped beneath ice, but rapidly escalated into a high-pitched whine that rattled our teeth. The water around our boots began to ripple in concentric rings, defying gravity as droplets danced into the air.
"Cover your ears!" Silas yelled, dropping to one knee.
A massive acoustic surge slammed down the corridor. It wasn't an explosion of fire, but of pure pressure. The air in my lungs was violently sucked out. I collapsed against the brick wall, gasping, my vision swimming in blinding flashes of violet and crimson.
Marco fell beside me, his jaw clamped shut so hard I heard his molars grind. He threw his arms around me, shielding my head as chunks of mortar rained down from the ceiling.
Within my chest, Prototype Zero reacted violently. The obsidian device accelerated, firing micro-shocks directly into my sinoatrial node to counter the external acoustic pulse. My chest heaved uncontrollably.
*“Warning: External ping detected,”* the automated voice from Marco's wrist module crackled weakly. *“Broadcasting location signature to Fleet Network.”*
"They're using the conduit as an antenna," Marco choked out, spitting blood from a bitten tongue. "They know exactly where we are."
From the darkness ahead of us, the beam of heavy tactical flashlights pierced the subterranean mist. Boots splashed rapidly through the water.
