Chapter 88 - The Citadel in the Mist

We walked for nearly an hour through the damp, dripping dark of the sub-lacustrine tunnel, our boots sloshing through ankle-deep water. Above us, we could hear the muffled, monstrous grinding of winter pack ice shifting on the surface of Lake Michigan.

Finally, the tunnel ended at a vertical spiral staircase made of rusted pig iron, rising into a cavernous concrete chamber.

We climbed into the belly of the Two-Mile Crib.

The structure was a colossal, octagonal fortress built of stone and reinforced steel, rising out of the deep water of the lake. In the center of the vast chamber was the intake well—a churning whirlpool of black lake water fifty feet across, framed by massive iron grates.

Suspended directly above the whirlpool was a towering, spherical super-structure of gleaming obsidian composite and copper coils: the Black Sun Array.

Dozens of monitors ringed the catwalks, their screens cascading with real-time biometric feeds of the forty thousand sleepers across Chicago. Their heart rates, brainwaves, and blood pressures were being unified into a singular, pulsing digital hive mind.

And standing on the central bridge overlooking the vortex was not a living man, but an automated surgical chassis—a four-armed titanium automaton linked directly to the console by thick bundles of fiber optics. On its chest was an illuminated plate bearing the name: *VANCE ARCHITECTURAL SYSTEMS - AUTONOMOUS REGENT.*

"Welcome home, Marco," synthesized a cold, mechanical voice through the overhead loudspeakers, sounding like a grotesque digital composite of Richard Vance and Samuel Bellini. "The collective heart of Chicago beats as one. Prototype Zero has arrived precisely on schedule to complete the circuit."
