Chapter 29 - The Iron Cradle

"Marco!" I lunged across the glass floor, catching him as he collapsed against the pedestal of his mother's chair.

His skin was burning hot while Elena's was ice-cold. The internal tear I had decompressed twenty minutes ago was reopening under the erratic, failing rhythm of the mother matrix. His blood pressure was plummeting; I could feel the thready, fluttering weakness of his pulse beneath my fingertips.

"Julian's monitor is dropping too!" my father yelled from the gurney.

Julian had slumped sideways, his consciousness slipping away, his oxygen saturation dropping into the low seventies. The three-way link was collapsing. If Elena’s heart stopped in this chair, the synthetic valves inside Marco and Julian would seize within sixty seconds, locking their ventricles into permanent, irreversible contracture.

"We have to decouple them!" I screamed at my father. "Dad! There has to be a manual override! You designed the circuit!"

"The decouple protocol requires a biological surrogate!" my father shouted over the screaming alarms of the bypass console. "The bio-electric signal can't just be shut off—it has to be transferred to a live, matching donor frequency while the inductive bridge is severed! If we cut the feed cold, the induction coils will discharge twelve hundred volts directly into their vagus nerves!"

"A matching donor frequency?" I repeated, my mind racing through every genetic and medical variable at lightning speed. "Elena's sons are the recipients, they can't be their own donors! Where do you get a matching frequency down here?"

My father didn't answer. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, leather-bound notebook—the same notebook I had seen on his desk when I was a child, filled with intricate circuit diagrams and biological schematics.

He opened it to the final page and laid it flat on the console in front of me.

Drawn on the page was a complete genetic pedigree.

At the top were Samuel and Elena Bellini. Beneath them were Marco and Julian.

And branching directly off a secondary line, connected to Elena Bellini’s genetic marker through a maternal lineage that predated the Bellini empire... was the name *Laura Chen*.

I stopped breathing. The sound of the alarms, the roaring of the lake, the hiss of the leaking coolant—everything faded into absolute, dead silence.

"What is this?" I whispered, my fingers trembling as they touched the ink on the yellowed paper. "Dad... what is this?"

"Your mother wasn't Chinese, Laura," my father said, his voice breaking completely. "Your mother was Sofia Bellini. Samuel’s younger sister."

The room spun violently around me.

"Sofia died when you were an infant," my father whispered, tears streaming down his scarred face. "I took you away from this family. I changed your name. I raised you as a Chen because I knew what Samuel did to everyone who shared his blood. I swore to God I would keep you away from this machine."

"She's our cousin," Marco rasped from the floor, his head resting against his mother's knees, looking up at me through the haze of approaching death. A faint, tragic smile touched his lips. "All this time... you weren't an outsider, Laura. You were the only one of us who escaped."

"And that's why your father hired you," Julian wheezed from the gurney, his eyes barely open. "Samuel didn't choose your nursing agency by accident. He brought you here because he knew... if the link ever broke... you were the only biological failsafe left on earth."

"No," I whispered, backing away from the console. "No, this is insane. I am a nurse. I am a trauma nurse from Chicago. I'm not... I'm not a key to a mafia machine!"

"Laura, look at them!" my father begged, pointing at Marco and Julian, whose monitors were now screaming in unison as their heart rates dropped below thirty beats per minute. "If you don't connect your pulse to the bridge, they die right now! In front of you!"

The alarms reached a crescendo.

Elena Bellini’s monitor flatlined into a warning tone. Her heart had stopped.

Marco let out a single, strangled cry, his eyes rolling back, his body going rigid as the lethal electrical feedback surged into his chest. Julian went completely limp on the gurney.

There was no time to process the lie of my entire life. There was no time to mourn the identity I had lost.

There were only two dying men whose lives were in my hands.

"Tell me what to do," I said, stepping up to the dais, my voice cold, hard, and entirely resolved.

"Take the induction clamp on the left side of the bypass console," my father instructed, his hands moving rapidly over the switches. "Attach it to your left radial artery. Press the black transfer toggle. When the signal acquires your sinus rhythm, I will cut the primary line to Elena."

I grabbed the heavy, gold-plated clamp from the console. It was fitted with three micro-needles designed for rapid transcutaneous arterial sensing.

I clamped it onto my own left wrist.

The pain was sharp, electric, shooting straight up my arm into my shoulder.

On the console, a fourth trace appeared on the green phosphor screen.

*Patient 4: Laura Chen / Bellini. Heart Rate: 110 BPM. Rhythm: Sinus Tachycardia. Signal Strength: 98% Match.*

"Signal acquired!" my father yelled. "Severing the mother link in three... two... one!"

He threw the heavy master breaker on the wall.

A brilliant flash of blue light illuminated the vault as the high-voltage conduits connecting Elena's chair to the ceiling were severed by explosive guillotine charges.

The shriek of Marco's monitor broke.

His back arched off the floor as my heart rhythm—one-hundred and ten beats per minute, surging with pure adrenaline—pumped through the inductive bridge, driving into the synthetic valves in his chest.

Marco gasped, his eyes flying open, his hand shooting up to grasp my wrist right below the gold clamp.

Julian’s monitor surged back to life at the exact same rhythm.

They were alive.

Tied directly to my pulse. Every beat of my heart was now keeping both Bellini brothers from dropping dead on the floor.

"It worked," I breathed, sweat dripping from my chin onto Marco's forehead. "It worked..."

May you like

"Laura..." Marco whispered, his fingers tightening around my arm, his dark eyes wide with sudden, absolute horror. "Look at the main display."
