Chapter 9 - The Healer’s Vengeance and Medical Truth

The following afternoon, Elena and I walked into the private room on the top floor of the Moretti Private Medical Pavilion.
The sunlight streamed through the panoramic windows, illuminating the tranquil room. Sitting in an automated leather armchair, looking noticeably healthier with color returning to his face, was Dr. Ronald Brooks.
When Dr. Brooks saw his daughter, his trembling hands reached out. “Elena... my sweet girl.”
Elena broke into a run, kneeling beside his chair and burying her face in her father’s lap as she wept tears of overwhelming joy and relief. “Dad... you’re safe. We’re both safe.”
I stood near the doorway, watching the reunion with a profound sense of peace settling into my chest. In all my years of accumulating wealth and power, no corporate acquisition had ever made me feel the deep satisfaction I felt at this moment.
Dr. Brooks looked up, his intelligent, weathered eyes meeting mine. “Mr. Moretti. Elena told me everything you have done for us. You saved my life... and you cleared my name.”
“Your daughter saved you, Dr. Brooks,” I said, walking over and extending my hand to the legendary surgeon. “Her courage and brilliant mind uncovered the evidence that the FBI needed. I merely provided the leverage.”
Dr. Brooks gripped my hand with surprising strength. “For five years, I watched the people who swore the Hippocratic Oath bow down to Arthur Vance’s money while my daughter cleaned floors to buy my levodopa. You didn't just save our lives, Gabriel. You restored our honor.”
Elena stood up, wiping her tears, and pulled a set of blueprints from her bag, spreading them across the table.
“Dad, look,” Elena said, her eyes glowing with passion. “Gabriel has converted the entire Vance laboratory complex into the Brooks Institute. We have twenty-five million dollars in initial research funding. The clinical trials for your targeted stroke therapy begin next month under FDA supervision.”
Dr. Brooks stared at the blueprints, his lower lip trembling with profound emotion. “My life’s work... it’s alive.”

“And you will oversee the research as Chairman Emeritus,” Elena added, wrapping her arm around his shoulders.
Looking at Elena in that moment—brilliant, passionate, radiant with purpose—I realized with absolute certainty that I was irrevocably, completely in love with her.
