Chapter 13 - Restoring the Brooks Name to Glory

One month after the trial, the Boston Medical Board held a historic public ceremony at Harvard Medical School’s Great Hall.
Before a crowd of two thousand physicians, surgeons, and researchers, the President of the American Medical Association formally expunged every false charge against Dr. Ronald Brooks.
“Tonight, we correct a grave historical injustice,” the President declared into the microphone. “We proudly reinstate Dr. Ronald Brooks to the registry of Master Neurosurgeons and present him with the Lifetime Distinguished Service Medal.”
The entire auditorium stood up, giving Dr. Brooks a five-minute standing ovation.
Dr. Brooks stood at the podium, tears streaming down his face as he held the golden medal. He looked out into the front row, where Elena and I sat side by side.
“I accept this honor not for myself,” Dr. Brooks said through the microphone. “But for my daughter, Elena Brooks, whose unshakable courage and brilliant devotion brought truth out of the darkest shadows. And to Gabriel Moretti, who gave us the shield we needed to fight for justice.”
After the ceremony, the grand opening of the Brooks Institute of Neurovascular Medicine took place across town.
The monolithic glass building in Cambridge was illuminated in brilliant blue light, its towering sign bearing the Brooks name in polished steel letters. Over five hundred million dollars in research grants had already been committed by international universities.
Elena stood in the center of the grand lobby, looking up at the portrait of her late mother that had been hung in the place of honor above the entrance.
I walked up behind her, holding two glasses of champagne.
“You did it, Elena,” I murmured, handing her a glass. “Your father’s name will be remembered for centuries.”

Elena turned to me, her eyes shimmering in the soft light of the lobby. “We did it, Gabriel. Without you, I would still be scrubbing floors in the dark.”
“No,” I replied softly, touching the side of her face. “You were always a queen, Elena. I was just the fortunate man who finally gave you back your crown.”
