Chapter 15 - The Vow of Iron, Grace, and Eternity

Six months later, the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston hosted the most magnificent wedding in the history of the city.
The massive stone cathedral was adorned with ten thousand white orchids and lilies. Over a thousand guests—governors, senators, international dignitaries, and hospital workers—filled the pews under the vaulted gothic ceilings.
I stood at the altar in a bespoke black tuxedo, with Marco standing proudly as my best man.
The great cathedral organ sounded the opening chords of the bridal march.
The grand oak doors swung wide open.
A hush fell over the congregation.
Dr. Ronald Brooks, walking without a cane, his head held high with radiant health and pride, walked down the long marble aisle with his daughter on his arm.
Elena was the most breathtaking bride the world had ever seen.
Her gown of pure ivory lace and silk cascaded in a twelve-foot train behind her. The cathedral veil floated around her like mist, crowned by a delicate tiara of platinum and diamonds. But it was the radiant joy and pure grace on her face that brought tears to the eyes of every person in the room.
When Dr. Brooks reached the altar, he placed Elena’s hand into mine.
“Take care of my brave girl, Gabriel,” Dr. Brooks whispered with a smile.
“With my life, Ronald,” I promised.
Elena stepped up beside me. Her hazel eyes locked onto mine, filled with an ocean of devotion and peace.
The Archbishop raised his hands, beginning the sacred ceremony.
When it came time for the vows, I took Elena’s trembling, delicate hands into mine.
“Elena,” I said, my voice echoing with absolute authority and tender love through the cathedral. “In a world of deceit, you showed me truth. In a world of cruelty, you taught me the power of grace. I vow to protect you, to honor you, and to love you through every storm and every victory, as long as breath remains in my body.”
Elena looked into my eyes, her voice steady and luminous.
“Gabriel,” she whispered. “You saw my dignity when I was invisible. You gave me your strength when I was broken. I vow to stand by your side as your equal, your partner, and your home, from this day until the end of time.”
I slid a band of platinum and channel-set diamonds onto her left ring finger.
She slid a matching band of polished platinum onto mine.
“By the power vested in me,” the Archbishop proclaimed, “I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride.”
I cupped Elena’s face in my hands and kissed my wife, amidst a thunderous standing ovation that shook the cathedral walls.
As we walked down the aisle hand in hand, the cathedral bells rang out across Boston, signaling the dawn of a new era.
The cruel socialite who had scalded an innocent maid was rotting in a federal prison cell, forgotten by history.
And the maid who possessed the heart of a healer and the soul of an empress now ruled the Moretti empire beside the man who loved her beyond measure.
